What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

I bet most people who are still on iOS 18 haven’t upgraded because of a lack of storage space. It always surprises me when I look at family and friend’s phones and they’re on an ancient iOS version because they don’t want to delete any photos or videos or pay for iCloud

OK so i was trying to configure iodine on my server right. Turns out it’s impossible to configure a DNS server to just hand over queries for some subdomain to a specific ip+port, it must be a “delegation” and for that you need a whole ass separate server with its own IP address. Fucking rich assholes designing this stupid garbage

Super disappointed that this was left undisclosed: bsky.social/about/blog/03-19-2

I don’t see how you can build a VC-supported free product without slipping into the Torment Nexus which is to say AdTech.

I do believe the Bluesky people really do want to try to do this. But I still don’t see how.

@timbray I am shocked, shocked to learn that the not-actually-federated, locked-in social network started by a bunch of cryptocurrency people is all in on cryptocurrency, VC and ads.

I cannot comprehend why you keep giving them the benefit of the doubt. They have told you who they are, repeatedly.

@thielenHerbert Thielen (HSWO)
Andere Fediverse-Applikationen für vielleicht spezielle Gruppen?
Würde mich schon interessieren, woher diese schon fast bizarre Interpretation her stammt.

RE: indieweb.social/@tg/1162573171

I’ve been thinking about this in terms of ongoing cost vs ongoing value.

If an app doesn’t have ongoing cost then why should it be paid for every month?

vs

If an app provides me ongoing value then why shouldn’t I keep paying for it?

The old Sketch model where you pay for a year of upgrades and get to keep what you have when you stop paying still feels like the best compromise.

I'm really struggling with the idea that the responsibility to correct for corporate evil resides with individuals, and that failing to do so constitutes some form of evil itself.

It would seem tantamount to castigating individuals for not recycling "enough" when the true cause of pollution lies with industry.

It would seem a way for capital to coerce the pro-human and anti-capital to tear each other apart, causing nothing but self-inflicted wounds.

Then again, blithe oblivion to whence one's resources come also seems irresponsible.

But like, I have work to do that is more important than choosing the least impure tool every goddamn day.

Q: Why so many unfinished projects?

I care about each line of code i write, what it does, how and why it exists, so I can actually maintain it.

I’d rather have an incomplete codebase I can revisit and trust, than ship something generated overnight without context or ownership.

Maintenance requires context, not just code:

- Clear problem definition
- Good architecture
- Solid system design
- Long-term ownership
- Discipline in testing and refactoring

That’s engineering.

RE: infosec.exchange/@ubernostrum/

I’m still looking for resources here if you know of any (tl;dr a company threatening debt collection over an account they admit is not mine).

I suspect a single piece of correspondence on law-firm letterhead resolves this, but for every firm I've talked to the dollar amount at issue is too low to even justify talking to one of their attorneys.
