What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

Q: Why so many unfinished projects?

I care about each line of code i write, what it does, how and why it exists, so I can actually maintain it.

I’d rather have an incomplete codebase I can revisit and trust, than ship something generated overnight without context or ownership.

Maintenance requires context, not just code:

- Clear problem definition
- Good architecture
- Solid system design
- Long-term ownership
- Discipline in testing and refactoring

That’s engineering.

Before they are smoked for sausage, Dutch skaters are thoroughly cleaned by their relatives on New Year's day at a special festive ceremony held on beaches up and down the coast. This has prompted the ever pragmatic and optimistic Dutch to refer to themselves as the "free-range humans of the world".

my anger may have been focused on AI lately but my real worry is the same as before—the gentrification of hacker culture by silicon valley techbros

when i look at software repos, there’s a far more important question i ask before even considering the developers’ stance on LLMs:

is it free software (centers people), or is it a product (centers market value)?

unsurprisingly, the slop machine gamblers are found almost exclusively in the latter category.

so what we’re dealing with here is basically just another symptom of the damage that corporate influence is doing to free software.

☀️ Researchers from our university, together with colleagues from CSEM, have achieved a record 30% efficiency for triple-junction solar cells, which combine two thin-film perovskite cells and one silicon cell on a single device. The milestone could advance affordable next-generation solar technologies for space and terrestrial applications.

Tonight on the workbench.. a 2015 Era that had a bad SSD (which I had a spare and replaced then installed Nixbook)

And then an older Lenovo Yoga that had a cracked screen registering a constant phantom touch, making the computer unusable.

I simply disconnected the "touch" data lines to the motherboard and now it functions as a non touch laptop.

These will both go to people in need for free.

Love to and for always making this possible!

Yes, Apple has dropped support for it, so it can be rescued by NixbookOS, but this laptop also had a bad hard drive in it, causing it not to boot up at all and be "dead". But over the years, I've collected quite the pile of spare parts and I had a spare Apple hard drive here (they're custom OF COURSE). I was able to put that in, install NixbookOS on it, and now it's not just usable, it's NICE!

On the right is a Lenovo Yoga, one of those touch screen laptops. Sadly the bottom left part of the screen got cracked, and the display was picking it up as a constant "touch", so the computer was unusable because it thought someone was constantly touching the screen. For that one, I was able to open up the computer and just cut the wires coming from the screen to communicate the touch screen. Sure, the touch screen doesn't work anymore, but it displays fine as a regular laptop!

"Israel deployed , a probabilistic classification system that assigned Palestinians a numerical rating representing their statistical likelihood of being a member of Hamas or Palestinian Islamic Jihad—drawing on the pervasive surveillance dragnet Israel has maintained for decades (cellular metadata, social network analysis, financial transaction records, behavioral patterns) to generate a score that determined whether someone should be assassinated or not."

⚠️ Update: is entering Nowruz, the Persian New Year, in digital darkness, as the internet blackout continues into day 21 after 480 hours.

With international connectivity cut and domestic service limited, many families are unable to contact loved ones when it's most needed.

Graph from NetBlocks showing network connectivity in Iran from 24 February 2026 to 20 March 2026. The y-axis represents normalized connectivity, ranging from 0% to 100%, and the x-axis represents the dates. The green line representing Iran's connectivity is high through the initial time period, with a sharp drop on the morning of 28 February. The continued drop in connectivity aligns with a nation-scale internet blackout imposed by authorities after joint military strikes by the US and Israel. A brief restoration was observed. The minimum and current connectivity levels are indicated as 1% and 2%, respectively. The chart has a dark background with a red horizontal arrow labeled 'SHUTDOWN' indicating the disruption period, and the NetBlocks logo in the lower left corner with the Mapping Internet Freedom slogan.

While the world watches other wars, the U.S. has quietly strangled Cuba with an oil blockade that's plunged 11 million people into blackouts, shortages, and despair.

No fuel imports for months → nationwide power grid collapse → families without lights, food rotting, hospitals struggling.

This isn't 'diplomacy'—it's collective punishment, called out by UN experts as a violation of international law and a grave humanitarian threat.

Yesterday it became public that has secretly got an additional 100 million US$ investment from venture capital investors. They kept it hidden for almost a year.

techcrunch.com/2026/03/19/blue

VC money generally requires a serious return on investment, so they must have plans to extract it from users, and, so it seems, from advertisers.

If it wasn't clear yet, the path to lies ahead.

It is also clear from the @fediversereportConnected Places that the AT protocol itself doesn't guarantee the avoidance of centralisation, or these kinds of extractivist business models.

Can we please help our friends who are at BS wake up from the inminent dangers? And while at it, help them join the Fedi.

Have a good Friday :-)

I'm thinking of getting an Raspberry Pi 400 as a "TV" computer, instead of a hockey puck device. The keyboard would be the "remote", and would live on the coffee table. Web views for things like Plex/Jellyfin/Navidrome/YT would be the "Apps".

Main issue I can see is that power and HDMI would need to snake across the floor, but I'm not especially precious about that.

Also, happy Friday! 🍻
