"Democracy is a better idea than fascism, but the liberal international order does not exist because it is a better idea. It exists because the democratic powers built bigger and better guns, killed millions of fascists, overthrew fascist governments, tried and hanged fascist leaders, and liberated or coercively democratized former fascist countries.... The liberal international order rests on a founding act of violence, of which the Normandy campaign was a crucial part. It was justified, of course, because it was also an act of self-defense against the fascists’ attempts to found their preferred world order on the rest of us."

Remember, that if you're still masking, you really are often offering some hope in a very "be the change you want to see" type way! A bit of story time on that:

I went to get my phone battery replaced yesterday, and the person at the front desk was wearing an okayish-fitting black surgical mask. I didn't say anything at that time, despite striking up a nice little conversation about the endless ads they had on the TV behind him.

When I went back to pick my phone up, I brought an extra 3M Aura, and broached the topic lightly, with a "It's really nice to still see someone else masking! That's pretty rare today", and he talked a bit about how he agrees, and really can't afford to get again - and mentioned his sense of smell still hasn't fully returned since the first time when a customer infected him. That seemed like enough of an opening - I brought the Aura out and offered it to him, asking if he'd be interested in an upgrade.

He was clearly curious and asked about it more - after I (very) briefly explained why it would be so much more protective, he was delighted! Like, his eyes legit lit up, and he even talked about how now his ears wouldn't be sore anymore, and how much more comfortable it looked.

I mentioned that the model info was on the front of the mask, and told him where he could get more of them dirt cheap - he said he was going to pitch that to his boss, and otherwise buy them himself

He was trying! He just had no reason to know there was anything better out there - after all: how often do you see someone masking at all these days in the wild, much less with a quality respirator?

It felt really good :>

Eh; let’s do another post. Hi friends, I am currently looking to get a job that will sponsor a visa for a US citizen. My primary skillset is in the land of SRE, devops, and related modern-ops things, but I also have some experience doing full stack dev w/ Typescript and even skill with C and C++. I know some Rust but don’t have formal experience there.
I’m looking for a gig in any country that looks safer for trans people than the US right now. I currently only know English (native) and Japanese (approx. JLPT N3 level, am actively studying), but am willing to learn whatever. At this time I only have a US citizenship and would need sponsorship. In a year or two, I expect my spouse will have acquired an EU citizenship, but has not as yet.

I've written an article about Ian Danskin's concept of "Stochastic Totalism" that affectively argues that The Matrix already exists and that we're all inside it.

I think it's pretty important. The moment I realised that we're *all* getting PewDiePipelined was pretty staggering to me.

I also happen to think it's the most important think I've written to date. I think the threat is pretty scary.

We just released version 4.1.0 of NodeBB. Here are the latest features you can now take advantage of!

As an aside, for the first time in a long while, both @baris and I are working on the same codebase again. Up until version 4 was released, I'd been working on the activitypub branch and periodically merging in the latest changes from develop. It's nice to be home! :house_with_garden:

Improved federation of Group actors :left_speech_bubble:

We've improved the activity synchronization for followed group actors. Local updates/likes/etc. are now federated outward by the category in addition to those from remote users. Thanks to @rimu@piefed.social and @freamon who worked with me on debugging this one.

Mentions and Emoji now federating out in source.content

Emoji and mentions have been sent out to followers since v4, but that wasn't reflected in the raw markdown content that we also send along. That has been remediated now, and this change improves nodebb-to-nodebb federation.

Video object type now parseable :tv:

NodeBB is now able to ingest Peertube Video objects, and render then in a topic just like other pieces of content. Thanks @deadsuperhero@forum.wedistribute.org for prodding me to get this sorted out!

Leader of the political party PKK, political prisoner Abdullah Öcalan, through a delegation of the DEM Party allowed to meet Öcalan, issued a "Call for Peace and a Democratic Society" calling on PKK to "gather your congress and take the decision to integrate with the state and society: all groups must lay down their arms, and the PKK must dissolve itself".

One of the delegation 'reiterated Ocalan’s position: "The realization of the disarmament process and the dissolution of the PKK are directly tied to the legal and democratic political steps that the other side is willing to take', which remains to be seen.

Call by Öcalan was widely celebrated, e.g. at Tişrîn Dam resisting Turkey's war of aggression in autonomous N&E Syria:
anfenglish.com/rojava-syria/pe

The commander-in-chief of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) alliance said
───
We welcome the historic announcement from the leader Abdullah Öcalan, calling for an end to the war in Turkey and opening the door to a peaceful political process.

This is a crucial opportunity to build lasting peace and foster stable, constructive relationships in the region.
───
The PKK of course was and remains entirely separate from the SDF and any of its components.

Just because you follow me, or if you see my posts on your Fediverse feed, doesn't mean you have permission to say rude or cruel things to me.

I know some friends do this as a way to express intimacy. I don't usually talk that way with friends, but I understand that some people do it.

But that intimacy is earned and negotiated. Just being on the same social web is not enough.

If the first time I interact with you, you insult or attack me, I'll block you. I can't tell you're "only joking".

I've been working on a new talk which I am so excited for! 🎸

"Bill and Ted's accessibility adventure" debuts at CityJS London in late April. Would be great to see you there!

Expect a fun ride through accessibility testing, many jokes, and a very tenuous metaphor!

I want to be able to write long-form articles using whatever text-editor I choose to use, editing a file, and using git

Not everyone will want to create long-form content this way — but I want to create long-form content this way

Also I don't just want to put the long-form content on some web-site, and post the URL from my Mastodon account

I want the long-form content to be a first-class ActivityStreams / ActivityPub object. An "Article" or a "Note" if I have to

Was bringt das?
