What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

All 550 of VOA’s contract status reporters, editors, videographers, engineers and techs just notified they’re terminated effective end of this month. We don’t distinguish internally between them and regular staff — all are highly skilled and absolutely critical to the operation.

“The Fediverse Isn’t the Future. It’s the Present We’ve Been Denied.” Here’s yet another brilliant feature by @DaojoanJA Westenberg. “The fediverse won’t succeed just because it’s better. It will succeed if and only if people choose it. If they reject the idea that being trapped in someone else’s ecosystem is just the cost of existing online. If they stop believing that “free” means surrendering ownership of your own connections, your own history, your own data. If they see that the internet wasn’t built to be a factory for engagement metrics and AI-generated content farms. It was built to connect us, not silo us to pad a wealth-extremist’s bank account,” she writes.

Okay, this is a PSA, I am not delving into politics on here anymore. We know who the “bad guys” are and I really don’t need to engage with it. The best any of us can do is in our own lives and at the ballot boxes. If worse comes to worst then we’re all just going to have to sort that out at that point.
I’m switching gears to content more personally palatable for me and will be looking to The Stranger and C-Span for updates on news.
Thanks, for understanding!

A bit more context for those who don't knit or know much about QR codes: A knitting pattern consists of a lot of text (and in this case, also a chart) so it's not feasible to encode the pattern itself into a QR code small enough to fit on a mitten. Compare these two QR codes. One is 25x25, and one is 29x29. The bigger one points to the actual URL for the mitten pattern (web-goddess.org/mittens.php), while the smaller one is using the goo.gl shortener to redirect to that same URL. I had to switch to a much thinner wool to knit the QR code at a resolution that would fit on the mitten (and would actually scan), so I needed the shortest URL/smallest code that would fit. In retrospect, I shouldn't have trusted Google. Lesson learned!

Google are breaking my mittens - Sonofa. Twelve years ago I knitted a pair of “self-replicating mittens” (web-goddess.org/archive/14046) with a QR code that pointed you to the pattern for the mittens, and I entered them in the Sydney Royal Easter Show. I was pretty proud of my cleverness. In the blog post (web-goddess.org/archive/11192) where I talked about making the mittens, I said:

I wanted my code to be as simple as possible, so I needed to use a URL shortener to mask my intended address. I settled on using Google‘s, reasoning that it was likely to be around the longest. (Though who knows these days, right?)

You can guess what’s happened, right? Google URL Shortener links will no longer be available (developers.googleblog.com/en/g) as of August this year.

Bastards are breaking my mittens. Perhaps I’ll have to add some embroidery. web-goddess.org/archive/56383

Looking for recommendations for a fedi instance for a new alt in the short term (this instance might have an outage soon and might eventually shut down entirely)

Requirements:
- Akkoma preferred (reacts, quote posts, markdown, Fedilab compatible)
- Frontend shows public/unlisted posts to anonymous users (this instance doesn't do that and it's pretty annoying when sending links to my own posts)
- High level of federation (does not block too heavily, is not blocked too heavily) (I would be happy with my fedi.absturztau.be account if that instance didn't have so many instances blocking it ages ago and never reviewing that block)
- High character limit (at least 10K, but less than 2^31 so it doesn't crash Fedilab)
- Good selection of blobcat and/or neocat emoji

governments debating the Modern Era Encabulation and De-Legitimisation of Rarified Doggedismical Turbulence Bill (it's about partially subsidising two menopause drugs for women over 65)

vs

governments passing the Please Stop Murdering Children Act (it's about requiring every webpage that receives more than one HTTP request per hour to store a copy of your passport, birth certificate, and ancestry DNA results)

two photos. the top photo is of a bunch of guys beating each other up. the bottom photo is of a collection of businesspeople sitting in a circular layout, presumably calmly debating something
