Learn the difference between being "busy" versus being *time-constrained*. Time constraint is an immutable fact of adult life; while it can (and should) be managed, time constraint can never be eradicated. Being "busy" should be better understood as a time-limited result of an earlier management error. If you find that your busy-ness has become permanent, you must learn to manage earlier, differently, and much *much* better.

Hi! I'm going freelance and I have a basic website for it now! :D fogwave.design

You might hire me if:
* Engineers have made a prototype or first version of your web app but you need someone to "make it Good™"
* You need a graphic design jill-of-all-trades: one-pagers, t-shirts, swag, marketing sites, publication covers, etc.
* You want someone to draw a cute mascot!

If you're interested, email me: hello@fogwave.design

There are a lot of Canadians who don’t want to visit the US just now. But if you have to, I would strongly advise going by air, because US CBP is in the airport in Canada. So they can still arbitrarily refuse entry because you voted Liberal or your name is Nadia or whatever, but they can’t throw you into detention without recourse, which they definitely can at the highway crossings, and seem to be doing more of.

On my wife's laptop, when it was on Ubuntu 22.04 on XFCE if the laptop lid was closed to put the laptop to sleep sometimes it wouldn't resume correctly and the mouse would not register clicks and the keyboard wouldn't type unless you did Control-Alt-F1 then back to X with Control-Alt-F8.

After some more digging I discovered both TLP and ACPI were trying to suspend the laptop when you closed the lid so I disabled the suspend in TLP. Then I think I found either ConsoleKit or Upower was trying the same thing.

Anyway, her laptop had to get a minor repair (power pin became loose from the board) when it came back I reformatted it, put Void Linux on it with Mate and only the services needed and it never, ever had that suspend/resume buggy input device problem again.

Another warning about travelling to the US. Any criticism of Trump can now be qualified as terrorism when entering the US:
A French scientist traveling to Houston to attend a conference was denied entry to US after a search of his phone & computer revealed messages critical of Trump's science cuts, "which [says CPB] conveyed hatred of Trump & could be qualified as terrorism". Computer confiscated.

I'm looking for my next thing, and I need to move fast. I have several years of experience in developer relations from startups to the enterprise, and I'm particularly skilled at distilling complex topics into something easily understood by newbies and non-technical folks alike, on stage or off. 1/3

Gnome 48 also brings so many improvements to Gnome Mobile.
Scrolling is just as smooth as it's on Android.
OSK and Touch text selection are better now.
And the cameras have started working on
Overall, it's getting to where it is starting to feel like a real alternative 🤩️.

My dream of crawling away from the clutches of Big-Tech gets closer.

We're considering adding custom background task support to 1.5.0.

Want to use Fedify's worker system for your own background tasks? We're exploring ways to let you register and process custom tasks alongside jobs.

Check out the proposal: https://github.com/fedify-dev/fedify/issues/206.

Key considerations:

  • Should this be part of Fedify's scope?
  • Quick API extension vs complete worker architecture redesign
  • Integration with existing task queue systems

We'd love to hear your thoughts! Do you need this feature? How would you use it? Share your feedback in the issue thread.

We've been working on adding custom background task support to as planned for version 1.5.0. After diving deeper into implementation, we've realized this is a more substantial undertaking than initially anticipated.

The feature would require significant API changes that would be too disruptive for a minor version update. Therefore, we've decided to postpone this feature to Fedify 2.0.0.

This allows us to:

  • Design a more robust and flexible worker architecture
  • Ensure better integration with existing task queue systems
  • Properly document the new APIs without rushing

We believe this decision will result in a more stable and well-designed feature that better serves your needs. However, some smaller improvements from our work that don't require API changes will still be included in Fedify 1.5.0 or subsequent minor updates.

We appreciate your understanding and continued support.

If you have specific use cases or requirements for background task support, please share them in our GitHub issue. Your input will help shape this feature for 2.0.0.
