I do think there are like, five to ten lines that are absolute bangers. I actually really appreciate that in the conclusion there’s a pretty overt attempt to bring the far left on board. I just wish it didn’t come like twenty pages after some very clumsy bashing. I was very surprised due to that.

When this bubble bursts, and the fraction of software that was created during it that remains useful will need stabilization. At some point the infrastructure that hasn’t been maintained will need rebuilding. Many engineers will be hired back again. But the people with the skills will be fewer and older.
We have CEOs telling junior developers to not bother learning how to code, try to vibe code. That’s scary! You don’t learn much with vibe coding. Learning is the best part of the job!
I tell my junior engineers to not outsource their learning. AI can’t do the modeling, the architecture, the understanding. Can it do boilerplate? Sorta! But the job isn’t writing boiler plate.
We knew this way back with the no silver bullets essay on incidental vs necessary complexity.
It’s also weak because of the time in which it was produced: I think something being written *right now* could be much stronger, simply due to current events. That’s not their fault but it does make reading it in this exact moment very strange.

I *hated* the beginning. It’s why there was such a long gap between when I picked it up and me finishing it. If I didn’t have these plans with friends I may not have finished the book. But the conclusion? It’s excellent! It should have been up front!

a good rule of thumb (that i consistently struggle to not violate) is that any system that uses "policy" as a blanket term for delegating complexity to users is one that deserves extreme scrutiny

I feel like I don't praise enough the fact that there are people out there with a different outlooks on development and how important that is.
Every complex system needs both synthesis and analysis work. Both are needed, intertwined and we always have to do both, but often lean more towards one side.
I remember years ago when I realized there's actually people who prefer finding/fixing bugs over writing features. That's awesome. I once thought everyone was features-over-bugs like me.
