Special Weather Statement, Lower Kobuk Valley; Upper Kobuk Valleys; Southern Seward Peninsula Coast; Interior Seward Peninsula; Eastern Norton Sound and Nulato Hills; Yukon Delta Coast; Lower Yukon River; Lower Koyukuk Valley; Middle Yukon Valley; Lower Yukon and Innoko Valleys; Upper Kuskokwim Valley, 2025-04-14 14:48 AKDT.

As a front over the southeastern Bering Sea pushes north, it will bring a messy combination of heavy snow, rain-snow mix, and rain to much of Western Alaska beginning on Wednesday and running through Friday. Between 2 and 8 inches of snow may fall in coastal locations, with between 1 and 4 inches for Interior valleys. The highest totals would likely be along the YK Delta coast. Precipitation will remain mostly or completely snow above 1500 feet in the Interior.

The front may set up from Golovin to Mountain Village, and there is a chance areas farther west may remain all snow.

Winter Storm Warning, Eastern Aleutians, 2025-04-14 14:44 AKDT.

WHAT...Heavy snow and blowing snow expected. Total snow accumulations of 8 to 20 inches, lowest amounts at sea level. Northerly wind gusts as high as 50 to 65 mph. Visibility reduced to one-half mile or less at times.

WHERE...Eastern Aleutians.

WHEN...From 4 AM Tuesday to 1 AM AKDT Thursday.

IMPACTS...Travel could be very difficult. Areas of blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility. Strong winds could result in significant drifting of snow.

ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Snow starting Tuesday morning picks up in intensity throughout the day along with the gusty northerly winds. The worst conditions look to be between Tuesday evening through Wednesday evening before snow rates decrease. However, gusty northerly winds, snow showers, and poor visibility could linger into Thursday morning. Unalaska will likely see the worst conditions and most snow accumulation with this storm. Akutan will also see some snow, but warmer air looks to change precipitation over to rain/snow mix potentially Tuesday afternoon and evening. Nikolski will be cold enough for all snow but looks to be a little too far west of the best moisture axis which will be over Unalaska.

"Everybody’s going to know if you paid to be a passenger on a five-minute flight or if you’re the commander of an interplanetary vehicle.”

100 kilometers is how the Swiss-based World Air Sports Federation defines the line.

Experiencing has little to do with altitude. It's a minutes-long version of the sensation people experience when they reach the peak of a big roller-coaster 🎢 hill

Unlike most others, we have made certain choices at Vivaldi that IMHO are important in this time and age. We believe the choices were important when we made them, but even more so today.

Our servers are in Iceland and they are our servers and not some cloud servers. We use them for all Vivaldi services, including things like Sync, Blogs, Forums and Vivaldi Social.

Electricity in Iceland is green. Most all of the power in use is hydro, with a little bit of geo thermal.

We do make use of CDNs for speed, etc., of course.

rural driving in aus: start in the town of Garrawuppa, population 87, consisting of a post office and a bakery selling vegemite scrolls, and home to a self professed "old mate" who remembers an old mate who remembers when this town had a train station taking you to the nearby (seventy kilometres away) gold mine. drive for one hour in a random direction. there are no visible signs of civilisation anywhere. stop the car to allow an echidna to cross the road. your phone has one bar of "E". a sign tells you to turn back unless you have five litres of water per person, and not to leave your vehicle under any circumstances, including a breakdown. the nearest servo is in Garrawuppa

rural driving in england: start in the town of Brentleysham-upon-Willingsby, population 5,210, consisting of all the amenities needed for modern life, and home to a family of knitters who have passed down a unique and world-renowned style of jumper down for generations. drive for one hour in a random direction. you have passed six more towns and are now in Old Foldopperstokesshireton, population 3,398. stop the car to allow the world-renowned Jam Parade Marching Band to cross the road. the nearest petrol station with miniature Greggs and Sainsbury's is right next to you

Looking for an apartment to buy in Sydney and quite alarmed to discover the lack of structural integrity in the design and construction.

If we lived in China, everyone involved would be in jail.

On a scale from A to E I would have to invent an extra catagory, F "Too Scratchy To Dance" (because it reminds me of the song https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ZwCVWbtVyIc )

Like the meme says, I knew the situation was bad but I didn't realise it was this dire.

Python advice requested:

I need to include a small test program, written in Python, in a repository containing other software not in Python. The program will have multiple source files and use dependencies from PyPI, but does not need to be installed anywhere. The expected usage is to just run it directly from the directory where it lives.

Is there a suitable tool to use to run it which will create a temporary virtual environment, install the dependencies, run the program, and then clean that stuff up?

This is exciting: blogs are coming to BlueSky: activitypub.ghost.org/recappin

"Probably the next most common thing we've heard is that many of you are confused about why your posts aren't showing up on Threads / Bluesky. And for good reason. It is, in fact, confusing.

"To make your Ghost site show up on Threads: You have to first interact (as in: like, reply or follow) something on Threads. Eg: Inside Ghost, search for @ghost and press Follow. Now, your site will also show up on Threads.

"To make your Ghost site show up Bluesky: You have to first search-for and follow @bsky.brid.gyBridgy Fed for Bluesky inside Ghost. Now, your site will also show up on Bluesky, but with a different (weird) username.

"We're going to replace the entire above process with two buttons: "Enable Threads" and "Enable Bluesky" - which you can just... click."
