Hey friends,

Does anyone have any knowledge of juniper species that are good for making gin/jenever that can be grown in hot summers (occasionally 100+F/ 37+C), very long growing season (March to November) and mild winters (no less than 20F / -7C and mostly above freezing throughout)?

The traditional European variety is too sensitive for our summers.

Please boost for visibility.

i got tired of seeing the meme with the ai-art otter (i don't even remember what the meme was about) so i quickly sketched an otter holding a sign. i didn't use the original for reference, so the sign proportion is totally different. also i don't often draw otters so this might not look very otterlike. also it's grumpy

feel free to use it however you like

personal, politics, +(?), violence, you probably shouldn't be reading this post, really you'll regret it

OH: "you know, i could probably manage to turn this to my advantage, like with brexit" "if you squint at it!" "like i managed to turn getting hit in the face repeatedly to my advantage. sorta" "it's not a stab wound, it's an extra hole!" "i could have someone fuck me into it!"

I grew up steeped in the "I would die for my country" or "I would die for my children" or "He died for our sins" where death was the ultimate showing of love...

...I have to sit with that.

But what I want to know is... Would you live for your country? Would you build for your children (and their children)? Would you help out your neighbor even if they don't follow your god?

Would you fix. Would you love. Would you grow, heal, and cherish for those around you?

Death is easy. Life is hard.

The greatest showing of love is to live and to help others live and to increase that quality of life.

I made a horribly hackey and quick election forecast model last night for and this is what I came up with.

It doesn't take into account demographic or candidate adjustments, and it's almost certainly underestimating NDP and GPC seats, but it backtests well 😅

I'll post some insights I've found over the course of the night, as well as updated projections as ridings get called.

Mute the thread or the hashtag to shut me up.

SEATS
------
LPC 191±4
CPC 132±4
BQ 19±2
NDP 1±1
GPC 0±1
PPC 0±1

Writing hacky little scripts that link together multiple APIs feels so cool. I've just written a python script that checks the Met Office's forecast for sunshine and then updates the inverter battery charge schedule depending on how much sunshine is predicted, so we don't export too much to the grid. I'm sure it could be a lot better but I'm pleased with it - my only other option until very recently was to go and manually press buttons on the inverter so this feels godly in comparison

Me: huh, I don't remember logging out of my session on the kids' laptop…oh, right, I did a `doas sysupgrade`, it did the upgrade, rebooted into 7.7, and returned uneventfully to the login screen without requiring any additional intervention or thought.

There's something wonderful about an upgrade-process so boring that you can accidentally forget you did it.

There are a lot of things I hate about Microsoft Windows but I think my absolute least, least favorite is the thing where as you scrollwheel down a pane if the mouse happens to pass over a dropdown widget it will stop scrolling and change the value and if you happen to move the mouse like 1 pixel while this happens it *keeps scrolling* now you have no idea what you just changed or where or potentially even that you scrolled at all

Random rant re: claiming your online space as a creator of any stripe.

Create connections with your people, not corporate platforms. As in:

"My online shop" *not* "My Etsy shop"

"My newsletter" *not* "My Substack" (or Ghost, etc)

I get that for some people, Substack is currently their only viable option. They do not need the marketing boost.

And I've seen so many times, for two decades now, "Oh look at the cute thing I found on Etsy!" with zero mention of the person who made it. Zero. Reinforce your name, not theirs.

Repetition = recognition. You bust your ass to build your thing. Make sure people remember you, not a corporate platform that could turn on a dime. You deserve better.

Rant over.
