The EU is still ignoring the requests from creatives to protect their rights. This initiative creators-for-europe-united.eu/ has written an open letter ready to be signed by all of us (so far 5411 signatures).
They ask for:
- full transparency about which works were and will be trained on
- adequate remuneration
- enforcement of copyright laws, especially against big tech companies
- involvement in AI regulations

@glyph Loved your talk! You mentioned that many libraries on PyPI aren't testing in browser so in case you hadn't seen this yet, urllib3 is being tested in Firefox and Chrome:

It's definitely not free and the config has been contributed by someone outside of our core team, definitely not straightforward to maintain. Would welcome this becoming much easier for Python projects to do!

The @w3cWorld Wide Web Consortium WebFonts working group now has a fully functional Demo of Incremental Font Transfer which compares IFT to normal font loading with Unicode-range static subsetting. Just click on "next text sample" to see the font being upgraded in real time to support more writing systems and more font variation axes. There is a running total of bytes transferred, you can see that IFT loads much less data.

Both CFF2 and glyf fonts are used in the demo.

Random rant re: claiming your online space as a creator of any stripe.

Create connections with your people, not corporate platforms. As in:

"My online shop" *not* "My Etsy shop"

"My newsletter" *not* "My Substack" (or Ghost, etc)

I get that for some people, Substack is currently their only viable option. They do not need the marketing boost.

And I've seen so many times, for two decades now, "Oh look at the cute thing I found on Etsy!" with zero mention of the person who made it. Zero. Reinforce your name, not theirs.

Repetition = recognition. You bust your ass to build your thing. Make sure people remember you, not a corporate platform that could turn on a dime. You deserve better.

Happy 10th anniversary for the Japanese release of the OG Xenoblade Chronicles X whooo!!!! The game I have been playing in my head for 9+ years.
