정치학자이자 인류학자인 제임스 스콧은 농민들의 정치적 저항의 사례에 대해 연구한 바 있다. 처음에 그는 화끈한 농민 봉기, 조직적 반란, 거대 규모의 항쟁과 시위, 거국적 혁명같이 스펙터클을 동반하는 현상에 주목했다. 농민 항쟁의 역사를 보면, 그러한 극적인 저항으로 인해 정권이 전복되는 경우도 간혹 있다. 그러나 제임스 스콧이 결국 발견한 것은, 일정 시간이 지나면 기득권 세력이 다시 원위치에 복귀하고 농민들은 여전히 수탈당하는 입장에 머물게 된다는 사실이었다. 아니, 이럴 수가. 그렇다면 농민은 결국 패배할 수밖에 없는 무력한 존재란 말인가. 그건 너무 우울한 결론이 아닌가.
고심하던 제임스 스콧은 새로운 관점을 떠올리게 된다. 어쩌면 그들의 주된 투쟁 방식은 대규모 봉기가 아니었는지도 모른다.

#Meta says it has 1 billion users of its AI, and I wonder if there’s a tradeoff for that. My own news feed was increasingly filled with #AI slop to the point of #Facebook being a distraction. I mostly use it for groups, which can’t be the homepage on mobile; taking the social out of social media. I uninstalled the mobile app and use my groups bookmark on desktop. I know I’m an anomaly, but I think there’s a risk of others hitting a similar decline in Facebook’s utility.
