OpenAI are now under a court order to permanently preserve logs of temporary conversations or paid API usage (previously subject to a 30 day retention policy) - a new twist in the now 17 month lawsuit between the New York Times and OpenAI simonwillison.net/2025/Jun/5/o

@simonSimon Willison Having read a fair chunk of the relevant docs, I'd quibble about "permanently".

Both sides are saying "we have further arguments to make on the importance/proportionality of preservation" so the judge has said "OK, preserve it until that is decided". Which is fairly normal.

On the privacy law issue, one of the discovery points that's ongoing is whether OpenAI can reliably separate data about US users. If they can, they wouldn't have to follow the preservation order for non-US data.

I think I've decided that the ideal desktop operating system should contain a Linux kernel booted via EFI_STUB. Own init system as a simple POSIX script. Bash as a shell. Toybox as a basic utils. Musl as a C standard library. Clang as a C/C++ compiler. The logic of dividing rights through users and groups is completely unnecessary on a personal computer, so there will be only one root user. Legacy folders that stretch far back into the past are also not needed, so only: /boot /sys /proc /dev /run /bin /lib /var /etc /root will remain. Bluetooth+Bluealsa should be used as the sound system and iwd+dhcpcd for Wi-Fi.

Do you think it is a good idea to let animals stay in local parks for people to see?

Describe a kind of car you would like to buy in the future。 What are some benefits of traveling to other countries and experiencing their cultures之类明显偏向中产考生的题目。

A critical look at NetBSD’s installer

NetBSD is an OS that I installed only a couple of times over the years, so I’m not very familiar with its installer, sysinst. This fact was actually what led to this article (or the whole series rather): Talking to a NetBSD developer at EuroBSDcon 2023, I mentioned my impression that NetBSD was harder to install than it needed to be. He was interested in my pe

And considering this tool is (ab)using jj's template system to output JSON records for each commit it's pretty fast and then shoving them in a SwiftUI list…

For my 400+ commit repo it's instant. For a repo with 11K commits it's fetching all commits in 1.5 seconds.

However with jujutsu you rarely deal with more than handful of "mutable" commits at once. Jujutsu marks commits that are pushed as immutable and generally hides those commits from you (with filters to show them if needed).

Added support for a raw terminal view (via @MigueldeicazaMiguel de Icaza ᯅ🍉's excellent SwiftTerm) and the beginnings of a "lanes" view (you know those little coloured tracks we all expect to see in a repo viewer). Plus a new splash screen with a repo picker. Settings (so you can change the path to the jj binary). And the ability to work on a machine where the $USER != "schwa".

Amazing what you can do when knee pain keeps waking you up at 530am every day.
