Linux with ZFS on root, using ZFS native encryption (no need for luks), works really well on Gentoo. I'm impressed with OddLama's installer tui-based scripts, the time savings are significant.

one item of interest: only two partitions required (three if swap is created). ZFS handles all of the usual requirements except EFI, just the way it should be.

"Technology can't solve social problems", first of all: bullshit. Iodized salt and fluoridated water, they count and they are miracles. Vaccines count and they are miracles. Modern logistics are a miracle, tap water is a miracle and all of these things are technologies.

Technology can't solve problems _when powerful people don't want them solved_. But technology in the hands of the people can absolutely solve social problems, the questions are only about who's in the way.

rant about illogical config files ---
Computer science is something that seems to me to require logic first and foremost. Yet many projects show a complete absense of logic.

IMHO if you set a default in the config, every subcategory should then be that default. Random subcategories should not ignore the default.

eg in aerc msglist_thread_orphan color has a higher priority (overrides) msglist_default color. Excuse me but who gives a fuck if a message is an orphan 😂? Surely its obvious to anyone that its more important to know if a message is read or unread yet this vital information is apparently impossible to color-code for.

good god nobody should have to spend a whole morning cracking the enigma code so you can tell if the things in your inbox have been read already or not

end of rant ---

The thing with RSS is you see all these people going "I love RSS! I want more RSS content!" But I've made RSS-facing apps before and nobody used them. I can't help but suspect people *want to live in a world where RSS is used* more than they *want to use RSS*. I have no idea what kind of cost/benefit analysis to apply to adding RSS outputs to a thing. If I RSSify a thing I don't know who would use it, and if someone tells me they'd use it, I don't know how to tell if I trust them

@mcc Weirdest RSS thing I want is to be able to get an RSS feed in my Mastodon feed. Not an RSS feed _of_ my Mastodon feed, but to be able to subscribe to the Dork Tower RSS feed, or the Astor Theatre Session RSS feed and have it show up in my Mastodon feed organically. It'd be way more helpful than whatever Google Reader replacement I'm currently on.

Sad thing is that I'm pretty sure I've got the skills to do it myself, but with everything else going on, just haven't got around to it yet.

My primary computer is a (mac) laptop. I dock it into a Thunderbolt dock on my desk. That dock has a bunch of additional secondary storage, as well as a wired network that attaches to a NAS.

I want a physical button that I can plug into this setup, which will:

- visually display the mounted status of those drives
- when pressed, cleanly eject the drives

Crucially, this needs to be able to work *while the screen is locked*. I've checked, and e.g. a Stream Deck will not let me do this.

How just quietly, radically transformed enterprise
becomes the first major enterprise Linux distro to discard traditional packaging and embrace immutable.
In 2010s, idea of an immutable Linux distro began to take shape. Following popularization of containers with rise of Docker, people became interested in Linux, where core system is locked read-only and can only be updated as a whole (atomically) instead of being updated package by package.

Every Linux distro I've ever used presents updates wrong IMO. Stop making me go to the app store to do system updates. System updates belong in the system settings and app updates belong in the app stores. Every other OS works this way. I don't go to the Google Play store or Apple App Store or (shutters) Microsoft App Store to install updates to my system. So why is every Linux distro sending me to their equivalent for it? It might be a minor thing but it's a pet peeve of mine. Especially with flatpak for user apps if I search for updates I don't also want to wait for the app center to search through all my system for updates too. And I don't wanna wait for looking for app updates when I'm trying to update my OS.
