What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

hey are you a cool hacker person who could help us pick a simple mailbox lock?

our collective cannot get to our own mail right now because someone kindly replaced our lock but also didn't give us the key ๐Ÿคฃ

we even have a new replacement lock to go in there! i think in the right hands this would take all of 30 seconds to do. let me know

Once again feeling frustration about a smol thing in Firefox caused by me failing to check one little setting or port one little about: flag between my desktop and laptop

Firefox would be a lot more bearable if I had access to the settings syncing, except
- I don't want to use any Firefox connected services, and
- Although you *can* self-host the profile sync, there's no documentation for self-hosting the account server, and an account server is required to use the profile sync, so it's useless

Open science forms the pillar for mankind to invent a better world, and a society worth living in. Or so it should be, if academia werenโ€™t held captive or willing prisoner to commercial interests. Fediverse opens new grazing grounds for , , or anyone for that matter, to uncover new and collectively.

If only more tools would add support to join our .

But we have @bonfire Open Science app, and @scifed as early adopters.

Snapshot of draft text for delightful-fediverse-experience curated list. It displays the text in the toot as well as the 2 platforms I mentioned.

๐ŸŒฑ Grow commons. Want to help free from corporate ?

Note the call for action in the previous post. Delightful is looking for dedicated gardeners (maintainers) who work with such tools themself and thus able to bring the necessary quality and rigour that is required for the process.

:boosts_appreciated: Boosts are appreciated.

Please open an issue if you can offer help:

While I understand and on some level commend Apple's dedication to requiring "apps" to keep current with platform technology (it's irresponsible to connect stuff to a network that doesn't have active security support), this is a good reminder that you should never buy games that you might care about from Apple because they all stop working eventually, with no compatibility layer, emulator, or shim that will help you get them running again arstechnica.com/gadgets/2025/0

Death

This is a big loss for the Node community and for everyone who knew Mikeal. Not only a kind person and someone who was always there, but he was also instrumental in reconciling Node.JS and building the Node Foundation without which the whole JS ecosystem might be different.

Mikeal is one of the people I immediately think of when remembering early Node days, and his code continues to be the bedrock of everything we build.

You will remembered, Mikeal

Dear Fedi friends,

By now you might have seen the post announcing the release of my promotional video for the Fediverse. But in case you have boosts turned off, here we go: news.elenarossini.com/fedivers

I posted about it this morning from my account because I have a 5000 character limit there. And I had so many people to thank for their help. It really takes a village.

Thank you for all the wonderful feedback so far โค๏ธ

My brain is working completely fine today and I'm feeling very normal which is why I'm just cycling and cycling and cycling on the comparable magnitudes of infinities.

There are infinite even numbers, odd numbers, and integers. The even number and odd numbers are the same size, but the integers are larger. Counting numbers (positive integers) and odd numbers are the same size. Fractions are way larger than integers โ€” they have a whole extra dimension! But all those collections of numbers are the smaller size of infinities: the countable ones.

The real numbers are uncountable, and so much bigger than any of those, even the multidimensional fractions, despite being all on a line. But the complex numbers are also uncountable, but with a whole dimension beyond the real numbers.

What a weird concept! (And this is just a concept, numbers aren't real. They are useful, though.) Numbers are nowhere near as weird as brains are, except Banach-Tarski, which calls into question the whole idea that numbers are useful for determining how much of something there is.

And I know someone got excited when I started talking about infinities and was waiting for it so here you go: "biject". You're welcome.
