What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

"Long before English existed as a language, however, a headless tribe was thought to roam the distant reaches of the world. They were known variously as Blemmyes or Akephaloi, and later discovered again in the New World as Ewaipanoma.

It wasn’t that this species lacked a face. The eyes, nose, and mouth were all present on their chest."

日本って制作者の主体性というものが信じられすぎていて、シュルレアリスムとか写真とかそういうものが評価される地盤が弱すぎる。一部イラスト界隈の反AIとかも「制作者の主体性」信仰から来るように思う。

Time for a new introduction!

Howdy, I be pockets (lowercase form is preferred but not mandated), I've been around the block a bit (celebrated my 1-year anniversary of being part of the Fediverse back in March, though that particular account only lasted for a month and a half before I forayed out in search of a more welcoming community).

My current banner is absolutely a reference to Pirates of the Caribbean. Just because we all have different flags doesn't mean we aren't all in this together. (And I love seeing all the pretty colors wave at Pride.)

Late-30s.
Late-diagnosed autistic.
Nonbinary.

And the rest will have to wait for you to get to know me, because as all my creative writing teachers so fervently impressed upon me: "Show, don't tell."

Hello World!

I just spoke with a #US #Senator office about the #fediverse . They're asking for more information to help spread around #Capital #Hill in small bite sized easy to understand pieces. I'm obviously going to give them @elenaElena Rossini on GoToSocial ⁂ beautiful #movie on the #fedi (with some light editing which she's agreed to).

I'll of course show them https://fediverse.info/ and https://fedi.tips/ which are great websites. I figured I'd give them examples of amazing #AP projects such as #mastodon , #pixelfed , #peertube , #bandwagon , and #bonfire ; even things like @adminFediMeteo .

I'd love to know from folks any EASY to understand projects that best encompass the Fediverse and explanations of it.

What are some projects you'd hand to your friends and family that would explain and display to them what we are?

I'll say this isn't going to happen over night. There's lot of questions around regulations, trust & safety, etc. But I feel it's pertinent to at least get the conversation going, especially considering the current state of disdain for big social media and the impending legislation around these things.

I'll finally state if there's anyone in this list that does NOT want to be involved with this, that's totally fine and I understand and I can exclude you from the materials I give to them.

Today I have the distinct honor of representing @Mastodon as we are acknowledged by the Digital Public Goods Alliance during the United Nations Office for Digital and Emerging Technologies's Open Source Week.

This news comes at a time when it has never been more imperative for public institutions to communicate directly with their constituents. Rarely in history have we trusted the truth and trusted each other less than we do today. Mastodon provides the infrastructure for organizations to maintain sovereignty over their digital presence, and empowers them to reach out to citizens without algorithmic barriers or paid promotion.

Recognition of Mastodon as a digital public good validates our commitment to building transparent, ethical technology that serves people over profit. Because truly, our values drive everything we do. We believe that true digital freedom comes from the ability of communities to connect, learn, and play together, while preserving each community's right to self-determination.

This recognition belongs to our entire community: every instance admin, developer, and fedizen who believes in building a more human-centered internet. Together, we're showing the world that social media can be transparent, ethical, and community-driven. We're proud to be part of a movement that puts people first and proves that genuine connections flourish when communities have the freedom to govern themselves.

Thank you 💞

Since switching from Windows to Linux and from Lightroom to darktable, my setup is no longer properly color-managed. It used to be - back on Windows everything was reasonably calibrated. But in the end, maybe it doesn’t really matter. Or more precisely: maybe it never did. Or rather: it’s hopeless.

Lighting conditions vary. Most of your screens likely aren’t color-managed or adapted to your current environment. And then there’s everything else - biology, psychology, mood. Truth is, we’ll never all see exactly the same image.

But perhaps that’s not a flaw - it’s the point. A space for different ways of seeing. Just as a sculptor starts with raw stone, I start with a RAW file: a block of digital potential. The image I shape from it isn’t the final word - just the beginning of someone else’s interpretation.

#Photography #Squared
A square color photograph framed with a white border, depicting a solitary leafless tree standing slightly to the right of center in a wide, open valley. The tree is set against gently rolling hillsides, covered in textured layers of grass and heather in muted green, yellow, and rusty brown tones. In the foreground, tall grasses are softly out of focus. A low stone wall runs horizontally behind the tree, subtly dividing the landscape. The diffuse, even light lends the scene a painterly quality with soft contrasts and natural earthy hues.

We need to separate identity from servers in the ActivityPub world. It's time. I should be able to have a single identity and use it with lots of servers from Mastodon to Lemmy and beyond.

Then, various instances could reflect different communities with different people in them, different features and policies.

This also would elegantly solve the "instance selection paralysis" in @tchambersTim Chambers 's Deadly Fediverse UX sin #1.

Fortunately @benpateBen Pate 🤘🏻 is starting to assemble people to solve this.

Due to an automatic flag by GitHub, Zen's repo is currently inaccessible, which also effects documentation and downloads. There is no code loss and we are actively working to resolve this issue.

We will post another update as soon as the flag is removed and the page is up again.

The non-native mind can't comprehend this level of platform integration. Ghostty is the only terminal on macOS other than the built-in one that provides any Shortcuts. Also, reminder that Ghostty is actually cross-platform with Linux too. (Sound on for explanation)

@jeffJeff (of the internet) @TheAdminNewsie.social Admin Team can u please assist w my concern re access to our postings & per this update is largest app to adopt , protocol powering the fediverse, worrying some that Meta will take over decentralized, open source social network made up of interconnected servers. Though Threads isn’t yet full integrated, already some server operators have preemptively Threads, so their users can’t interact w Meta-run social network and vice versa.

llm garbage again, I know, I'm sick of it too

My company, against my stringent insistence, has recently greenlit developers to use certain llm "technologies" to "assist" with writing code

Since that time, I have received a number of code review requests for code that was completely nonsensical. Like, preprocessor defines guarding empty lines. A series of adjacent logging statements, each one using a different logging methodology. Code that doesn't even compile.

Like, these are things that not even the greenest intern would do, and every one of these was from a very senior developer, at the "this code is ready to be merged into the project" phase. And even a cursory reading of the code reveals the problem.

In the golden age before large language models, I would assume some kind of version control messup. However, every time I commented on the offensive code with a polite translation of "what the fuck is this shit", the response was "oh chatgpt lol"

Kids, don't do LLMs

It looks like @tailscale will be implementing funnel + authentication.

bsky.app/profile/apenwarr.ca/p

I'm thrilled about this. It will be fantastic for Dropserver and any other thing where you want to give access to friends without inviting the entire universe to poke at your server.

Basically Tailscale will make all visitors authenticate via an identity provider before forwarding requests to your little server. Your app just has to authorize based on whether you recognize that email or not.

https://sammlung.staedelmuseum.de/en/work/frankfurt-am-main-1-mai-1931-9

Because someday, somebody's going to come to you and say, I'm from Apple, I'm from Amazon, I'm from Project Zero and you need to drop what you're doing because heartbleed or Log4j or who knows what happened and the world is falling over and if that psychological offramp isn't there, if you haven't laid out clearly what PROVIDED AS-IS means and how you're going to act about it ahead of time, saying "no, I'll be at my kid's recital" or "I'm on vacation" or just "no" is extremely difficult.

And not to put too fine a point on it, but Facebook is happy lighting billions of dollars on fire whenever their boss finishes an early Gibson novel while moving his lips. Every embalmed corpse in the Google Graveyard was entombed with the kind of wealth that'd make a Pharaoh cringe.

They've gained tectonic wealth from labour they got for free and for them to turn around and say, someone's dropped a cigarette in this tower we've built out of dry kindling, you owe us?

No. Tap the sign.
