What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

Almost cooked my laptop today, it seems that the latest kernel that came down the pipeline (6.15.2-zen1) had issues with temperature sensors.

I could see the temp at a balmy 39 Celsius while I was heavily compiling stuff in 30+ weather.

I only realized fans were not running when the keyboard became uncomfortable to have my hands on.

🧵 So to recap something that happened yesterday, as I see it:

Yesterday Mastodon gGmbH sent out an email to mastodon.social and .online users announcing a new TOS. The TOS would take effect July 1, and would ship in the next version of the Mastodon server software as a suggested "template" TOS instances could adopt.

This TOS had multiple problems, and several people said so loudly. This morning, Mastodon announced they're backing off and taking additional legal advice:

Sigh. I'm still so bothered by that "chatgpt rots your brain" paper BECAUSE it correctly positions some of the compelling questions we have about LLM usage but then does us all a disservice in its approach, pushy interpretation, and inappropriate or misleading framing of brain evidence and measurement of human problem-solving, imo

I am asking myself: what studies would *I* design to evaluate people's usage of LLMs in keeping with learning science and without neurohype?

We've heard your feedback on the Terms of Service updates for mastodon.social and mastodon.online, and we're pausing the implementation date (previously announced to users via email as 1st July 2025) so we can take further advice and make improvements.

It may take us a moment to consult with the right people, so please bear with us while we do so. As always, we appreciate your patience and support.

“it doesn’t work” when my experience is that it does just alienates me, when I do also share ethical concerns! But I’m not gonna end up aligning with a movement that denies the basic reality I experience. I wish critics would drop this line and make arguments with more substance.

https://ea.rna.nl/2024/05/27/when-chatgpt-summarises-it-actually-does-nothing-of-the-kind/

No really: ChatGPT doesn’t summarise. When I asked ChatGPT to summarise this text, it instead shortened the text. And there is a fundamental difference between the two. To summarise, you need to understand what the paper is saying. To shorten text, not so much. To truly summarise, you need to be able to detect that from 40 sentences, 35 are leading up to the 36th, 4 follow it with some additional remarks, but it is that 36th that is essential for the summary and that without that 36th, the content is lost.
