What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

As part of our celebration, we're spotlighting what real users have to say about the impact of FreeBSD in their work.

🎥 At BSDCan last year, we had the chance to chat with Amy Margus from NetApp, who entered the FreeBSD world just two years ago after two decades in tech.

Her story is a powerful reminder that it’s never too late to embrace new tools, adapt, and grow. 🚀

Afraid of my new tool I'm writing acquiring users that I will then have to support, so intentionally driving any other human away from the tool by making use of git submodules in the repo

One gets a smug satisfaction from having issues reported with $THING, only to browse through the output of

$ git log -p -- file.ext

and read the comment with the direct marching orders to do $THING in the way it is currently implemented rather than deal with the root cause in the data. Timestamps and all. Would you like me to disinter the email in which you made the request, too?

:faux_shock:

@lcamtuflcamtuf :verified: :verified: :verified: Sure. Corporations are, as Mitt Romney correctly noted, people. So these are human defects.

I do think the idea of corporate responsibility, and especially the implication that it obviates the need for strong unions, government regulation, or other counterweights, is fairly new and worth skepticism, though.

Want neovim to return the cursor to the position it was when you last closed the file?
Put the following into the lua config and thank me later:
vim.api.nvim_create_autocmd({'BufWinEnter'}, {
command = 'silent! normal! g`"zv',
})

Do you know of examples of a software library's test suite catching a bug in its upstream dependencies? I've seen a few of these over the years, and I'd like to put together a small list. Things like:

- A programming language implementation's test suite uncovering a bug in other implementations
- A library's test suite uncovering a bug in the language implementation itself
- A framework addon's / extension's test suite uncovering a bug in the framework

The Wayback Machine managed to capture a Linux Journal article about the Arch Linux distribution's plan to switch to "rye-init" before whatever human intelligence remains there figured out that "rye-init" does not actually exist.

The Linux Journal predates LWN by some years and was, for a long time, the definitive read for Linux users. The Don Marti ( @dmartiDon Marti ) years were especially noteworthy. It is sad to see where it has ended up now.

@saxnot Yeah, IFTAS had something similar, and the amazing FIRES (fires.fedimod.org/) exists, however we need something immediate and well integrated with Pixelfed for now.

I will be making this compatible with FASP (github.com/mastodon/fediverse_) so other platforms can use this too.
