@andypiper yeah that blog by matrix explains the real blocker. ive actually held a phone back in early 2024 that had matrix fully interoperable with whatsapp when they were still beta testing. but then they already knew that if meta pushed hard on the eu-ip requirements it would be over. then that blog by matrix in sept 2024 confirmed that matrix-whatsapp interop would never happen
since then the entire eu policy ppl have just ignored this, declared victory for DMA anyway and moved on
