What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

if you aren't already, it's time to get radical about the climate emergency. or, it's way past that point, so you gotta get double or triple radical now at least, if not more

I learned something today: Google's Gemini "AI" on phones accesses your data from "Phones, Messages, WhatsApp" and other stuff whether you have Gemini turned on or not. It just keeps the data longer if you turn it on. Oh, and lets it be reviewed by humans (!) for Google's advantage in training "AI" etc.

But this only came to my attention because of an upcoming change: it's going to start keeping your data long-term even if you turn it "off": " will soon be able to help you use Phone, , , and Utilities on your phone, whether your Gemini Apps Activity is on or off."

This is, of course, a and .

If this is baked into Android, and therefore not removable, I'd have to say I'd recommend against using Android at all starting July 7th.

This makes me real hesitant to publish anything online. Especially given that AI's are angling to replace search engines which would mean I wouldn't even receive traffic in exchange for anything I publish.

There's a clear double standard here where we're assuming AI's to be human for copyright purposes - but *only* for copyright purposes. And of course a human can't replace Google.

So, a hypothetical situation for which I am soliciting feedback:

We are in some moderately populous city, for which there is - suddenly, unexpectedly - unreliable power and no network. Cellular, ISPs, those things stop. Power, it's maybe sporadic, DNS is gone.

There is some plausible critical mass of nerds who want to be useful, Lora mesh & let's go. We stand up a server.

What's on that server and why?
