About to do some dev work involving timezones, found a library that gives me a timezone for a latitude/longitude (github.com/harlemsquirrel/tzf-), but the example includes an invocation that returns an array of timezones, so now I'm trying to understand if a single geographic point can have multiple timezones...

I know there are towns that have multiple timezones, but currently unaware of a single point having multiple.

Exciting new horrors for us to confront: the organization has decided, inexplicably, to roll out some kind of "pro AI scraping" signals in web requests - based on an expectation of "good faith" from those doing the scraping (????)

This is such a boneheaded decision, and I hope everyone rightfully blasts them for it. CC has (had) a purpose which it fulfilled admirably. It should continue fighting for the rights of its users, not bending to AI companies and rolling out the welcome mat to rampant theft.

A local chess club meets up at our usual kombucha place every Tuesday night, so I met a friend there to play over the board. Not knowing how it worked, I brought a board and clock.

I was hustling when I left the house and somehow lost a pawn in the process.

My wife, while tending the new puppy in the middle of the night, found a pawn in the couch cushions and excitedly left me a stickie note with her find.

Amazingly, it's not from the same set. 😂♟️

Favorite Photo: Perito Moreno Glacier by Linda DV (away) flic.kr/p/R51kjL

Perito Moreno Glacier

Argentina. Patagonia. Santa Cruz Province The Perito Moreno Glacier (Spanish: Glaciar Perito Moreno) is a glacier located in the Los Glaciares National Park in southwest Santa Cruz Province, Argentina. It is one of the most important tourist attractions in the Argentinian Patagonia. The glacier is unusual in that it is advancing, while most glaciers worldwide are retreating. The reason remains debated by glaciologists. The terminus of the Perito Moreno Glacier is 5 kilometres (3 mi) wide, with an average height of 74 m (240 ft) above the surface of the water of Argentino Lake, in Argentina. It has a total ice depth of 170 metres (558 ft). Due to its size and accessibility, Perito Moreno is one of the major tourist attractions in southern Patagonia. It is less than two hours by bus from El Calafate, and many tour companies run daily visits. A large visitor centre at the site features a walking circuit which allows visitors to view the southern flank and the east facing edge of the glacier. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perito_Moreno_Glacier Blue ice occurs when snow falls on a glacier, is compressed, and becomes part of the glacier. Air bubbles are squeezed out and ice crystals enlarge, making the ice appear blue. Small amounts of regular ice appear to be white because of air bubbles inside them and also because small quantities of water appear to be colourless. In glaciers, the pressure causes the air bubbles to be squeezed out increasing the density of the created ice. Large quantities of water appear to be blue, as it absorbs other colours more efficiently than blue. Therefore, a large piece of compressed ice, or a glacier, would appear blue. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_ice_(glacial)

I think the only thing I genuinely miss from Misskey, which I wish was just like a "standard feature" of all Fediverse software, is Misskey's user drive feature which lets one directly manage one's uploaded content, treat it like a form of cloud storage, and select previously-uploaded files for appending to new posts thereby solving file duplication. I know that Mitra ostensibly has a sort of file hash that should prevent file duplication of exact file copies from being stored, but it is a bit different. Misskey is a bit "overkill" for a small instance like mine, and Mitra fits perfectly. However, that's about all I really miss from Misskey. Not to say that Misskey isn't phenomenal software itself---it would be my first choice if I planned to host a larger community. Mitra is perfect and ideal for smaller communities. Different tools for different applications, I guess.

Excited to share that I've joined (Open Source Software Contribution Academy) as a mentor for the @fedifyFedify: an ActivityPub server framework project!

OSSCA is a national program run by South Korea's NIPA (National IT Industry Promotion Agency) through their Open Source Software Support Center, aimed at fostering the next generation of open source contributors.

We're currently in the process of selecting around 20 mentees who will start contributing to once the selection is complete. I've been busy preparing good first issues to help them get started on their open source journey.

Looking forward to working with these new contributors and seeing what amazing things we can build together!
