This is an interesting observation: I responded to someone's public post on a Mastodon (glitch) server as a private message (I have a toggle in my Compose interface that allows me to control that). That message went out fine and they received it, although I'm not sure what the UI looked like.

Their response #ActivityPub message from Mastodon however was unusable. I found it in my database, but the to and cc fields were empty.

{
  "cc": [],
  "to": [],

  "type": "Create",
...
}

I suppose I could still pull these up for the UI using the inReplyTo field. But blanking out the address fields seems like a weird choice for #Mastodon.

Welcome to the submission thread for the July edition of #FairtradeMusicFriday.

As always, submit your own release or someone else's, it can be by #FediMusicians or not, hosted on #Bandcamp, #Faircamp, #JamCoop, #Mirlo or #SelfHosted, as long as it is by an #IndieArtist - it doesn't even need to be new.

Just make a direct public comment (with a link & description) to this post and it will appear at https://isitfairtrademusicfri.day automagically!

Why not make a muso's day and buy/boost their stuff ๐Ÿ’™

The problem is not the introduction of glass as an element of the visual design language. If used as the Dock background alone, it would be totally fine! But because someone said โ€œUI should get out of the wayโ€ and no one challenged itโ€”instead of content literally being the focus, Apple has to intentionally put content *out of focus* (blurring) to make the glass elements visible. They have to put a gradient behind the glass so you can see it. That shouldโ€™ve been the โ€œoh, it doesnโ€™t workโ€ moment.

But here we are with a new visual design language that somehow manages to compromise on both the content area *and* the UI.

Iโ€™m *living* on macOS Tahoe and Iโ€™m here to tell you that the apps that are a pleasure to use are the ones that havenโ€™t adopted Liquid Glass (in essence... all the third-party apps.)

This should be a blog post. But I need to collect my thoughts and write it all better. So consider this a beta version. lol

You know, I could write a whole blog post about thisโ€”and I mightโ€”but I think we need to start addressing the very likely possibility that the *entire thesis* that โ€œUI should get out of the wayโ€ and โ€œapps should focus on contentโ€ is wrong.

Apps arenโ€™t just for looking at photos or videos. Theyโ€™re for navigating through these things, organizing them, editing them. The tools to do those things should not get out of the way. They should be clearly defined and separate from the content.

A screenshot of the Photos app on macOS Tahoe, with Liquid Glass toolbar buttons, icons, and a search field, which blend so much into the content that theyโ€™re barely noticeable.

A lot of criticism of Gen AI's unacceptably low output quality misses the point.

They're introduced by decision makers who don't understand the work produced and don't care about quality.

Expecting the ICs using these tools to care more about quality than their bosses seems unreasonable.

Number of fully grown folks out there who think they're gonna convince decision makers that work quality and long term value is more important than next quarter's bonus check is higher than I would have imagined.

Love the hopeful vibes, but y'all ain't tired?
