I was playing around in ivy (high precision calculator) with Stirling's approximation and noticed something. I compute (Stirling N)/N! for successive powers of 10:

The successive approximations improve (approach 1.0) by one decimal digit of result for each digit of argument, but that's not the curious part. The curious part happens after the 9's: the result seems to be trending towards a limit of 0.9...166666...... It adds not only a 9 for each input digit, it extends the next part by a digit 6 for every factor of 10. Now 1/6 is 0.166666 and that makes me think there's something going on here.

Goodger is a fellow kiwi, and I know he's one of the smartest browser technologists out there. So all that's to say: OpenAI is in a really strong position here, and is building off the open source technology Google brought into the world (sound familiar? see transformers!). I guess I wonder now if Google will try to turn Chrome into an "AI browser" too. I hope not, but I fear that is the direction they will go now.

Ok, here we go with the full-on "AI browser" competition. Perplexity has announced its new browser Comet, which founder Aravind Srinivas says "powers a shift from browsing to thinking." I interviewed Srinivas in January 2024, when he told me he was Larry Page's biggest fan. Looks like he's fast-tracking the Google playbook with all that VC $$ — going from chatbot to search engine & now browser, all in the space of 18 months or so.

The platform will use Kid Web Services, an Epic Games-owned tool, and users can verify their age by scanning their face, uploading an ID or entering details for a payment card. 그나마 희망을 주는건 이때부터 북극이 급격하게 가열되면서 안정되어 있던 북극진동이 흐트러져 제트기류가 남하, 상대적으로 8월 기온은 안정될 것이라는 전망이 나온다는 것입니다. 밀린 비도 이때부터 내릴지도 모르겠습니다. 다만 다음주에 비가 한 차례 내린 뒤의 7월 4주차(7/21~7/27)와 5주차(7/28~8/3)엔 정말 끔찍한 더위를 각오해야될 수도 있습니다. 태풍이 변수로 작용해서 좀 더 지켜봐야겠지만, 조금 쉬었다 다시 숨을 꾹 참아야 할 지도 모르겠네요. 오늘은 경제노트 없이 여기서 인사드리겠습니다. 좋은 주말 되세요!

비가 오는 동안은 차가운 기압마루가 크게 남하하여 상대적으로 더위가 살짝 가시겠지만 그 뒤의 날씨는 아직 종잡을 수 없는데요. ECMWF 500hPa 모델을 보면 중국에 강력한 열고기압이 형성되려 하는 모습이 보입니다. 이후 2번 그림을 보면 7월 후반, 북태평양고기압과 열고기압이 연결될 가능성을 예측하고 있는데요. 만약 고기압 세력이 이렇게 계속 강해지면 찜통에 물만 보충하는, 지옥의 습한 더위를 예고하는 상황이 될 수도 있습니다. 장기모델이라 틀릴 가능성이 있긴 해도, 일부 모델은 7월말 서울 기온 39℃를 예측하기도 해요.

열대저기압 두개는 일단 배제하고 다음주 날씨를 예상해봅시다. 16일자 GFS 모델과 18일자 GEM 모델입니다. 이날부터 전국 단위 강수가 시작되고, 집 나갔던 장마가 잠시 돌아오겠습니다. 18일자를 보면 좁은 영역에 집중호우구역이 형성될 가능성이 있고, 필리핀 남쪽 몬순순환장에서 태풍의 씨앗이 발생하는 것을 볼 수 있는데요. 이후 20일 모델을 보면 장마전선은 완전히 북상, 기상학적으로 올해 장마는 끝날 것으로 보입니다. 마른장마에 폭염이 겹쳐 지금 저수율이 난리난 상황인데, 해갈에 큰 도움이 되지 않을 것 같아 걱정입니다.

두 열대저기압이 합쳐질 수도 있고, 혹은 세력이 강한 쪽으로 종속될 수도 있는데요. 이 과정에서 저기압의 이동 경로는 마구 휘어집니다. 그런데 거리가 적당히 멀면 아예 후지와라 효과가 발생하지 않을 수도 있어요. 이런 경우의 저기압 궤적 예측은 상당히 어렵습니다. 예측 불가능한 이 문제는 잠시 제쳐두고, 기온부터 보도록 합시다. 아침 최저기온은 19~25℃, 낮 최고기온은 25~36℃입니다. 주요 도시별로는 서울 25~36℃, 대전 23~34℃, 대구 23~34℃, 광주 24~34℃, 부산 23~30℃, 제주 25~30℃입니다.

이는 4호 태풍 다나스가 남긴 파편이 92호 열대요란과 만나 강수대를 몰고오기 때문입니다. 다만 중부지방은 적어도 오는 주말까지 맑고 불볕더위가 이어지겠습니다. 늦은 오후부터 13일 오후까지 제주도, 남부지방에는 비가 내리기도 하겠는데요. 현재 JTWC 기준 93호 열대요란이 곧 5호 태풍 나리로 발달할 것으로 예상되고 있는 가운데 두 열대저기압의 거리가 매우 가까워서 후지와라 효과를 일으킬 것으로 예상됩니다. 과거 솔릭-시마론이 그렇게 될 뻔한 적 있었죠. 후지와라 효과란 소용돌이 치는 흐름 간의 간섭 현상을 일컫습니다.

한반도 중부에 위치한 티벳 고기압과 북태평양 고기압 두 층에 의해 구름이 적어 야간에 복사냉각을 비교적 잘 일으켜 푄 현상으로 인해 발생하는 단열 압축과 어느 정도 상쇄를 일으키기 때문입니다. 그 덕분에 당초 동해안에 불어오는 바람보다는 약간 데워졌지만 상대적으로 건조한 바람이 불어오면서 아침나절 바람이 시원하게 느껴지는건데요. 물론 본격적으로 태양빛이 내려꽂히는 낮이 되면 이런 느낌따위 싹 사라지게 됩니다. 그나마 다행인건 아주 습하지는 않을 거라는것 정도겠네요. 주말 동안 이 고기압대는 밀려나며 다시 바람의 방향이 바뀝니다.

25/7/11 날씨 이것저것 오늘은 위성 사진으로 시작하겠습니다. 북만주부터 이어지는 커다란 기압마루가 한반도로 향하고 있습니다. 구름이 북동풍을 타고 곧게 늘어선 모습이 보이죠. 중학교 3학년 과학 교과서를 펴보면, 이 기단을 오호츠크해 기단이라며 초여름에 한반도에 영향을 주는 한랭습윤한 기단이라고 묘사하고 있습니다. 이 바람은 영동에서 백두대간을 타고 단열 팽창을 하면서 동해안 쪽을 시원하게 만들고, 내려올땐 단열 압축이 일어나 서해안 쪽을 뜨겁게 합니다. 하지만 오늘 수도권 아침은 꽤 서늘했죠? 이는 열돔 때문인데요.

Using an SVG with a foreignObject and drawing that to a canvas gets close, but getting external resources like fonts and images to load is a pain. 😅 Not to mention things like checked checkboxes.

There’s a way to use getDisplayMedia() and restrict that to a specific element, but the API is desktop Chrome-only. 😕

Goodness knows what I am ever going to do with the gazillion baked goodies I will cook between now and when the stress level drops in the US.
Today felt like homemade cinnamon poptarts.
I made a small batch so there is one each for my daughter's family of six.
They do smell really good.
They also generate a huge mess in the kitchen for six small pastries.
Was fun though.
