あまりにカッコいい書名なので(?)手に取ったのだが、内容はもっとすごかった。
明治初期から関東大震災までの時期に起きた、民衆による大規模な暴力行動を軸として日本の近代史を解説するもの。一見「反権力」的に見える事件と、関東大震災時の朝鮮人虐殺をあえて分けずに「民衆暴力」と呼ぶことによって、反権力的に見える暴力行為にも実際は多様なメンバーが多様な動機で参加していたことを解き明かしているのが特徴。
朝鮮人虐殺については二章に渡って取り上げ、背景となった社会状況と、加害者たちが暴力行為に至る心理的な背景を解説している。
在郷軍人会や青年団が国家に認められた民間暴力組織として地域に根差していた点、三一運動以降、朝鮮人民の反撃に対する潜在的な"恐怖"が統治機構側に広がっていた点、自警団に参加した男たちのマチズモ、義侠心文化、そして暴力行為を行うことによって残虐さが加熱していく点など、目から鱗が500枚は落ちる内容。これは必読書ですね。
本書を読むと、森達也に代表されるような「普通の市民が集団心理によって豹変して虐殺に荷担した」というイメージの問題点もはっきりする。その理屈には、具体的な国家や社会が不在なのだ。
いくら差別意識が蔓延していようと、大災害によって極限の心理状態にあろうと、やはり人を殺すのは並大抵のことではない。それも大量に殺害するためには、国家による人員的、物理的、心理的な"後押し"が不可欠であった。
これはハンナアーレントの需要のされ方にも感じるのだけど、具体的な背景を取り除いて普遍的な人間心理の問題(人間は誰もが虐殺に荷担しうる)に注目する手法が好まれるのは、個々人の心構えで戦争や虐殺を予防できるように感じさせるからではないか。
しかし、現実の虐殺や戦争はどう考えても国家と切り離せないわけで、国家を変えなければ世界は変えられない。いつのまにか巻き込まれないよう"心構え"として重要なのは、動員されないこと、動員が動員であると気づくことだろうが、そのために有効なのは内省よりも政治行動や学習だろう。
「自分も差別する側に回ってしまうかも」と内省することはまあ重要だが、「差別する」ことと「虐殺する」ことには大きな距離がある。そこを混同して語るのは、暴力の物理的な側面を軽く考えすぎだと感じる。

"Special announcements": a sudden meeting is called with everyone in the company to relay information in 15min that could have been an email.
