The varied contributions to this interdisciplinary Special Issue highlight assumptions about the human perception of, attitude toward, and responsibility for the animals that are read and written about, thus demonstrating that just as “the animal” does not exist, neither does “the human”. In their zoopoetic focus, the analyses are aware that animal narratology ultimately always contains an approximation of an animal perspective in human terms and terminology, yet they make clear that what matters is how the animal is approximated and that there is an effort to approach and encounter the non-human in the first place. Many of the analyses come to the conclusion that literary animals give readers the opportunity to expand their own points of view both on themselves and others by adopting another’s perspective to the degree that such an endeavor is possible. Ultimately, the contributions call for a recognition of the many spaces, moments, and modes in which human lives are entangled with those of animals—one of which is located within the creative bounds of storytelling.

We have early access to Android Security Bulletin patches and will be able to set up a workflow where we can have releases already built and tested prior to the embargo ending. For now, we've still been doing the builds after the embargo ends. It will mainly help when they screw up pushing to AOSP.

Aging of unicellular and multicellular eukaryotic organisms is a convoluted biological phenomenon, which is manifested as an age-related functional decline caused by progressive dysregulation of certain cellular and organismal processes. Many chronic diseases are associated with human aging.

These aging-associated diseases include cardiovascular diseases, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, chronic kidney disease, diabetes, osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, sarcopenia, stroke, neurodegenerative diseases (including Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, and Huntington’s diseases), and many forms of cancer. Studies in yeast, roundworms, fruit flies, fishes, mice, primates, and humans have provided evidence that the major aspects and basic mechanisms of aging and aging-associated pathology are conserved across phyla. The focus of this International Journal of Molecular Sciences Special Issue is on molecular and cellular mechanisms, diagnostics, and therapies and diseases of aging. Fifteen original research and review articles in this Special Issue provide important insights into how various genetic, dietary, and pharmacological interventions can affect certain longevity-defining cellular and organismal processes to delay aging and postpone the onset of age-related pathologies in evolutionarily diverse organisms. These articles outline the most important unanswered questions and directions for future research in the vibrant and rapidly evolving fields of mechanisms of biological aging, aging-associated diseases, and aging-delaying therapies.

Here's a neat appearance of the Catalan numbers that I came across by fiddling about with some code. Count the number of lattice walks of length 2n from (0,0) to (0,0) but weight each walk by (-1)^w where w is the winding number around (1/2, 1/2). The result is 4^n C_n, where C_n is the nth Catalan number.

You can think of this as (1) a subcomputation when trying to count lattice walks on a lattice drawn on the Riemann surface for the square root function or (2) the probability amplitude for an electron in a (very simplified model of a) 2D lattice returning to its start point after 2n steps when there's a certain amount of magnetic flux through the "plaquette" next to where it starts. Eg. see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peierls_substitution

A walk on the 2D integer lattice that winds around (1/2, 1/2) twice.
