이 문서는 지구평평론을 비롯한 음모론, 선동을 뒷받침하는 세계관, 정치적 용도로 주장되는 대안적 사실/탈진실 등 민주주의의 주권자인 개인이 사실관계 레벨에서 합의를 볼 수 없고, 근거를 들어 사실관계의 오류를 설득할 수 없는 사례들에 대해 다루기 위해 만들었다.
문서의 제목인 대안적 실재(alternative reality)는 이 개념들을 묶어서 설명하기 위해 급조했다. 대안적 세계관이라는 단어를 쓸까도 해 봤는데 세계관이라는 머리속에 있고 사람마다 다른 게 당연해보이는 단어보다, 인식과 관계없이 존재해야 할 것 같은 실재라는 단어를 골랐다. 영단어로는 팬픽션의 세계설정 배리에이션을 가리키는 단어(한국에서는 AU라고 부르는)인 것 같지만….
『누가 진실을 전복하려하는가』와 『지구가 평평하다고 믿는 사람과 즐겁고 생산적인 대화를 나누는 법』으로부터 시작해야겠다. 리 매킨타이어는 음모론자들이 어떤 과정으로 음모론에 빠지게 되었고, 어떤 방식으로 그들을 대화의 상대방으로 만들 수 있는지를 정리해왔다.
『거대한 퇴보』에서는 인도의 사례를 들어 무슬림에 대한 적대적 세계관을 형성하는 사례를 읽을 수 있다. 해당 글에도 썼듯 이것은 인도만의 일이 아니다.
『은유로서의 건축』을 읽을 때도 비슷한 고민을 떠올린 흔적이 있다.
어릴 때 읽은 진실을 배반한 과학자들과 관련된 저술들은 과학이 자본에 의해 왜곡되는 현상을 다루었다. 연관이 있어보이지만, 이들의 왜곡은 의사결정권자들의 판단에 초점이 가 있었다고 생각한다.
불행하게도 나는 내가 문제라고 생각하는 사람들의 머리 속 세계관과 내 머리 속 세계관 중 무엇이 더 맞고 무엇이 더 옳은지를 논리만으로 구분할 수는 없다고 생각한다. 대충 찾아보면 니체도 비슷한 말을 한 것 같은데, 이 부분은 적절하게 인용할 수 있게 되면 인용으로 교체해야겠다. 아무튼 이 지점에서 나는 민주주의에 대한 믿음을 근거로 삼을 수밖에 없다. 적어도 민주주의가 호명될 때, 모든 실재는 대안적일 수밖에 없다. 모든 실재가 대안적이라는 사실은 신을 죽여버리고 가치의 판단을 스스로 하기로 결정한 사람들이 짊어진 멍에이자 명예다.
인생이 버거운 이유 중 하나는,
모르는데 아는 척하고
없는데 가진 척하고
안 친한데 친한 척하고
힘든데 안힘든 척하기 때문이다.
척하는 인생은 에너지가 몇 배가 든다.

- If the Trump administration goes after Bluesky, this is a case where we clearly side with Bluesky. It doesn't help anyone to be under attack like that.
- It's also a motivating reason to make Bluesky not depend on one corporation sooner than later, and encourage such designs generally, wherever possible.

Not sure if I agree completely with this whole essay, but the idea of using smaller, focused LLMs particularly good at a certain task makes way more sense to me than the current obsession with AGI.
This may sound like I'm snarking on Bluesky again with this one; I'm not (and I certainly wouldn't snark on Wikipedia). I hope I am wrong about this, it's really that most of the rest of traditional media and the old social media companies have been captured.
Simultaneously, I believe:
