I do not like this “new tech deal”. I mistrust it, and I mistrust those who made it. They’ve already defunded the CMA in some vague desire for “growth”, and I feel like this will be more of the same. Selling us to US tech companies for profit. Not happy.

The learning curve of the language and the system is rather steep, but being able to setup a system in a declarative and reproducible manner is worth a lot in complex software environments.

NixOS has become my daily driver for the past months and I have not had the need to switch back to my previous Linux distro even once.

If you ever had the desire to deploy an OS reliably, I'd strongly recommend it.

@jsm @cksChris Siebenmann I agree but we have to remember even more companies have realized they can save a lot of money by both not self funding through contribution or buying from a vendor. They just demand the project help them via guilt and emails.

My hot take is that maintainers should be quicker to reply to emails like this with, “you seem to have mistaken me as your vendor. I’m not.” and then get back to doing what they love.

The latest Meta AI steak sauce debacle should be a nice case of schadenfreude, but my schadenfreude circuits are fried. So very much painfully embarrassing and shameful and even comical stuff is being said and done by arseholes who remain rich and powerful. There's no glee for me in their shame.

There's a lot more I could say. In many ways ActivityPub would not have happened were it not for my exposure to the Blender community.

Reminder: before you go full-on defeatist about the rule of law, keep in mind it remains often effective on a micro-level. It’s on the macro- that the FedSoc types have killed it. Hard work and good lawyering can make a difference for regular people — though not always, and not all of them.
