What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

Adler makes a point: Any game excludes people. Every design decision excludes people. The impulse is "exclude no one" but this impulse is wrong, impossible. The question you *should* ask is: Is this game excluding *the same people who every game tends to exclude*? *That* would be wrong.

This point generalizes beyond games. This sort of choice (or attempt to deny the choice) comes up in designing any human thing.

Genuine Rabbithole of Crazy Department

I rescued a boombox from the trash and repaired it, used outdoors for BBQs, it dates from the iPod era
One of the speaker cones started rattling, tore it down to find busted speaker surround
Driver model number is a NOPE across internet including eBay
Manufacturer markings have a website and a weird glyph; website has expired SSL cert, but it's Let's Encrypt, so someone just forgot to renew
Forge ahead but it's a "server error"
To the Wayback Machine!

Hi @dansup !

Now that TikTok has been bought by pro-zionists, and probably in a few weeks the platform will shadow-ban most pro-palestinian content, there’s boatload of people looking for a platform they can move to!

Loops would be great, but it’s 1-minute video limit prevents most reporting type content.

Have you considered raising the limits? Or maybe a payment system that allows content creators to get more?

There's some interesting stuff in here. One thing that comes across in lots of the comments is the stultifying pressure of everything always being recorded & posted. Everything you do or say could be in front of the whole world in minutes. Everyone is *one stage*, all the time. Who can breathe?

Trump is ordering the military to kill people in Portland who resist fascism. Those are unlawful orders and every soldier has a legal obligation to refuse them. They swear an oath to the constitution not the president.

Soldiers have a duty to disobey orders that are unlawful. It is not insubordination to do so, it is a constitutionally mandated act and an act of courage. Troops must not harm civilians, doing so is illegal and they know it. Remember the My Lai Massacre and the Nuremberg Trials.

The AI boom is showing concrete signs of a bust. The latest US Census Bureau survey reveals the largest drop in corporate AI adoption since tracking began, with usage among large firms falling from 14% to under 12%.

The core problem is a complete failure to monetize: 95% of companies using AI report it has generated zero new revenue.

Companies are now re-hiring human workers, signaling a realization that enterprise AI cannot yet deliver on its promises.

In this age of disinformation and AI slop, it becomes increasingly difficult to distinguish what information is true or not online.

The lack of tone, diversity of cultures, and the fact that many people using social media in English aren't native speakers make it all harder to detect irony and serious-sounding jokes online.

Please be careful and make sure your jokes don't end up feeding the disinformation machine, even if you feel it's obvious to you. In doubt, at least use the popular markers "/s" (sarcastic) or "/j" (joke) or parentheses at the end to make this clearer.

Thank you 🙏💚

@Em0nM4stodonEm :official_verified: Disinformation.
A word that sounds harmless - just intentional false info, right? But to me, it's much worse. It's poison 🧪 It spreads slowly - destroying trust, relationships, and common sense.

I feel pain. Real, deep pain 💔 when I see how this sickness shows up in the media, in everyday conversations, even in the minds of people I love.

The worst part? I don't know how to fight it. I'm not good at speaking fast. I need time to think and find the right words - but disinformation moves fast ⚡, hits hard, and doesn't wait.

And that makes me hate it even more. Because it takes away my voice. Because it makes me feel powerless 😶‍🌫️ Because I watch it damage the world while I stand there - fists clenched, unable to speak.

This isn't just an internet problem. It's a cancer growing in our society. Something so simple - yet so wild and uncontrollable.

And it hurts me. Deeply :blobsadreach:

It's that time of year again: make sure to get your COVID-19 shots! It's not just the right thing to do for public health: it's an act of defiance against RFK Jr, who is desperately trying to deprive Americans of vaccines so diseases (like measles) can spread.
There's a lot of confusion over COVID-19 vaccine availability after the anti-science crackdown by the guy with the literal brain parasite. What does it mean that the shot is "not recommended" for most Americans? Will health insurance companies not pay for it? Will pharmacies not offer it?
Here in Texas, I went to an HEB pharmacy and got it. I didn't have to provide health insurance information: it was free. I'm unclear on if I would have gotten it without a qualifying condition. Your mileage may vary, and this is a situation that could change rapidly, but I recommend going to your local pharmacy and trying to get it while you can.

“All a ‘true ActivityPub server’ is for is storing data, fanning out subscriptions and collecting incoming data for you to view. was originally designed so that all of the data presentation layers—Mastodon, PeerTube, Pixelfed—would be specialized clients communicating with the generic server. But the first popular apps cut out the client-to-server part of the protocol, so people think you need a separate identity for every client application. news.ycombinator.com/item?id=4
