What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

If someone contacts your organization anonymously from an alias email address to request further details about how you collect and process a certain type of data that isn't described in your privacy policy as mandated, be wary.

It is best to answer promptly, truthfully, and thoroughly.

It could be a privacy professional about to report you to the data protection authority.

are working as hard as they can to stop people using a piece of machinery without giving away your

I love my laptop and desktop but imagine sourcing your own components and assembling it all yourself. And after all that effort you are told 'You cant use it without our express consent'.

I have hated Microsoft for over 30 years. This just confirms i was always in the right.

"You must have an account to use a machine?" In what world is this ok?

As my burnout sabbatical from tech work goes on, I’ve been reaching out to more and more people I’ve thought of as friendly colleagues, and the conversations invariably, by the other party, turn to LLM coding agents, and I’m hearing a constant refrain

their belief comes down to: If you value ethics more than productivity, you do not belong in tech

we’re halfway through the decade of “hold my beer” and the past year has been particularly disillusioning, but this in particular, especially coming from people who’ve mentored me or whom I’ve particularly gelled with, has felt like an ongoing gut-punch

BuZZ-dEE ☮️ 🇺🇦 🇪🇺 🇩🇪 shared the below article:

Optique 0.6.0: Shell completion support for type-safe CLI parsers

洪 民憙 (Hong Minhee) @hongminhee@hackers.pub

Optique 0.6.0 introduces intelligent shell completion to type-safe command-line applications, supporting Bash, zsh, fish, PowerShell, and Nushell. Unlike traditional CLI frameworks, Optique leverages the same parser structure for both argument parsing and completion, eliminating duplicate definitions and ensuring synchronization. Setting up completion is straightforward, with users generating and sourcing a completion script for their shell. The system works automatically with all Optique parser types, offering context-aware suggestions, including file system completion and custom logic for domain-specific value parsers. Additionally, the release enhances command documentation with separate brief, description, and footer texts, and introduces a `commandLine()` message term for clearer command-line examples in help text. Existing Optique users can easily migrate by adding a `completion` option to their `run()` configuration. This release aims to make Optique-based CLIs more user-friendly without sacrificing type safety and composability, providing sophisticated runtime features while maintaining compile-time guarantees.

BIG PEERTUBE CO-OP UPDATE:

Last night, I interviewed the final steering committee candidate.

And just like that—it’s official. We now have seven incredible people (plus me) who’ve come together to co-organize this co-op.

Every single person brings something unique—skills, experience, heart—and it honestly feels like we’re assembling a dream team.

This moment is a turning point. We’re no longer just talking about starting a co-op. We are one in the making. Over the next few weeks, we’ll be shaping our mission, vision, and bylaws—the foundation for what will eventually become a fully incorporated BC co-operative.

It’s wild to think how far this idea has come in just two weeks. And we’re only getting started.

A brown-and-white spotted dog sits on the floor in front of a blue couch, looking excitedly at the camera. The dog raises its paw for a high-five, wagging its tail in celebration.

Happy (National+) Coming Out Day, from your friendly neighborhood bi lesbian trans woman in tech!

Public service announcement: femininity is not scarce. If you want to be a girl, you can just be a girl. (Woman, etc) Same goes for every other gender and non-gender.

In the past, I used to think that all guys knew it was inherently better to be a woman, and it's just that life isn't fair and not everyone can. I'm happy to report that, while it's true that life isn't fair, if you think it's better to be a woman, you can just do it. (And it probably means you were one all along, for that matter) That's not a thought cis guys have. That's a thought that women have when they haven't realize that they are women yet.

This discovery, and subsequent transition, made a huge difference for me. My life isn't perfect, but it is so much brighter and richer. I am so much more alive than I was 3 years ago. Sometimes I wonder "jeepers, am I really doing this? Am I really a trans woman?" Then I remember how much more at home I feel in my body and mind, and remember that this absolutely is me.

(Ever feel like it was kinda gay for you to like women? Me too. Turns out I'm super gay for women.)

It is never too late to transition.

Lots of love to my queer and trans siblings today. 💜🏳️‍⚧️💜🏳️‍⚧️💜

(And send a DM if this post made your heart race and was kinda scary but also exciting. I've been there recently, I'll help you figure yourself out or suggest other resources if needed. You can do this!)

People tend to think of ALT text as a "good thing to do for people with disabilities". That is true, but also reductive. It is useful for everyone, as is generally the case with accessibility.

I sometimes see posts with screenshots of text in a language I don't speak. If they had ALT text, I could use the "Translate" feature, and it would translate both the post and the transcription.

If you post in English, everyone who doesn't speak English fluently will benefit from ALT text.

I remember hanging out in a cafe with a programmer who was snarking on artists who weren't "smart" enough to use something like POV-Ray and make their 3d art with blender instead, why not just use code to make everything

And my friend, who's both a programmer and an artist, said simply: "sometimes you just want to use your meat hands"
