What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

Hey! I'm looking for work, preferably contracting. I'm an experienced Rust dev (9+ years hobby, ~6 years professionally) and I'm interested in backend, embedded, cryptography or security work (loosely, I've done a very wide range of work). I've mostly done development work professionally with some security on the side. I've won a few international CTFs and I'm part of the #1 global CTF team Kalmarunionen. You can contact me at pollyboutet@gmail.com. I'm based in Copenhagen, mostly looking for remote.

Boosts welcome!

I forgot how tedious it is to chase code coverage when writing tests.

However this was part of the reason that made me include the "boring" parts of building a robust library into the goals set for the grant.

So after a couple of days of work I finally got the first of the storage backends for the library go past 80% test coverage.

I hope I can reuse some of the test logic in the other backends, as they need to perform identically.

I’m so ashamed …

This week, the UK Home Secretary proposed shocking reforms that could seize the possessions and jewellery of people seeking , cut off their support and tear apart who have built their lives here.

This is performative cruelty reminiscent of Germany.

Sign and share this urgent letter to stop the government punishing families fleeing .

Reached this year's goal of 6000 km bicycling just in time before we get the first snow here in Stockholm, Sweden. Counting down the last 30 km in the cold was kind of tough and sweet at the same time. For some reason, my toes got cold, but I did not want to give up before reaching the goal. At the same time, I was super content to keep the level of bicycling for many years now. I wonder how much longer it will last.

A folding bike in a forest next to the lake Brunnsviken in Stockholm. The trees have frost on their twigs. The grass is also full of frost.

blog.lauramichet.com/thoughts- it's honestly not hard to imagine a world where people are legally forbidden from selling software or hardware that refers to itself in the first person or is referred to as a person by any supporting materials (eg marketing), and where the intent embodied in such software is always explicitly attributed to the human beings who produce it and set its policies. i don't think that would fix everything but it'd help. that's a moderate position IMO.

I have autocompletion on the command line for git branch names, tag names, commit hashes... basically any commits or named commit pointers.

A lot of my working branches start with my username, "dariusk"

Sometimes I get very lazy and type "git checkout da" and then tab for autocomplete and get a list of every commit hash starting with "da"

Some solutions: have a different username. Have a different first name. Type more than two characters before hitting the autocomplete.

Fucking GROSS.

So because »gestures at this timeline«, the first appliance from Cory Doctorow's ( @pluralisticCory Doctorow ) "Unauthorized Bread" is now on the market. A 'smart oven' you buy and subscribe to the company's meals, which bear a QR code you scan so the oven, amidst its ongoing datastream to the mothership, 'knows' how to cook it. The company, which I will not name (and you please won't either), claim you can use the oven to cook your own food, too. But you have to have their app and a wifi connection to set it up and to operate most of its controls, which means at any moment the company can go "lolnope" or put controls (or the ability to cook unauthorized food) behind a paywall, or brick the thing deliberately, or sell your food logs, or do any of the other things Doctorow described better than I, which is why I've linked the story here.

Since people asked, my top places for trans people right now are France, Australia (parts), Canada (parts), Spain (though politics there are tenuous), Iceland, Uruguay.

Tech workers!

Open Source now powers just about every technology out there.

If you find yourself in that magical position of having more money than time to donate, please reach out to the projects you use and the projects you love.

The global to do list ranging from coding to documentation and more is endless but we all do our part.

I can guide you on OpenZFS, bhyve, and several aspects of FreeBSD.

@guigsyDave Mc @futurebirdmyrmepropagandist rods are only sensitive at low levels of light. they deactivate at the light levels cones are sensitive at, so it’s hard to get them to activate at the same time

it is possible though- if you’ve ever been in a dimly lit room with an alarm clock with a red light display, and noticed how the vision of the room doesn’t quite line up with the red lights.. like it’s… lagging! that’s your rods responding at a different rate from your red cones
