Apparently RAM prices are going through the roof, both DDR5 and earlier DDRs, because thanks LLMs, and they're expected to stay that way for maybe all of 2026¹. I guess my 2018 home desktop gets to stay being my desktop for another year or two.

(It's not like it's suffering from performance issues, although it does now take 45+ minutes to build Firefox.)

¹ Oh look, another reason to hope for an LLM crash that guts the demand for new GPUs with lots of RAM.

So I’m quickly running out of non-caffeinated herbal teas/tisanes that aren’t bedtime teas to have in the afternoon.

What are your favorite non-caffeinated (not decaffeinated) teas that aren’t overwhelmingly fruity? Bagged in paper or loose.

In "Gödel, Escher, Bach" there's a passage about record players where Hofstadter posits that every machine has a particular crafted input which is inimical to its design. For my particular connecteome, this is the accurate spelling of the words: Gingrich, bureaucracy, Caribbean

The YouTuber F4mi recently made a great video about why modern user interfaces in games have gotten so bland in recent generations, and went into great detail about the market and management forces which restrict creativity in the UX space.

I chimed in in the comments about more of the technical reasons why flat vector art has become the norm in games. F4mi liked the input, but a whole bunch of randos hopped on to say shit like “IDK I think you’re all just dumb and lazy. Just make better menus”

"Suddenly, media outlets seem to have figured out that President Donald Trump is really, really unpopular. There’s been a palpable shift in the discourse: The New York Times reports that Republicans are quietly looking beyond Trump, suggesting he’s losing his grip on the party."

They said it couldn't be done!* But it's getting close! Search match styling will change, and there is no GUI for this yet. But we now have an end-to-end connection between the renderer, input stack, and search internals.

*: Nobody said it couldn't be done.

@stefanoStefano Marinelli
I don't remember many details; I had lost my family in an accident less than a year before, and my brother, who always told me how to get around, wasn't there to help me. I walked around the block of the Rectorate twice until I found the place to submit my registration and documents :) I went through the procedure mechanically, choosing 5 courses: physics, calculus, chemistry, language, and the optional course was Fortran. I left relieved and in a hurry: I want to go back home.

🤘 New episode of Changelog News!

Cedric Chin says comparisons of our current AI *maybe-bubble* to the dot-com bubble and the 2008 GFC are limiting, Matthew Prince does a post-mortem on last week's Cloudflare outage, "hl" is a fast / powerful log viewer for humans, Enthusiast Guy's Continuum 93 is a fantasy computer emulator, and a list of things that aren't doing the thing.

Others have drawn parallels between AI and photography: the invention of photography decimated the market for portrait painters but didn’t eliminate painting as a craft, pastime, or vocation.

Photography was invented 200 years ago.
The majority of paintings we all know were painted *after that*.

People ask me why, in an AI era, I devote my time to tools for crafting a site by hand.
People will still make sites by hand.
All the best tools for making sites by hand *have yet to be invented*.

so, okay, we've been making mistakes in production with DNS since we were 16, right? we can tell you some stories!

none of them end in someone telling us "don't worry, nobody else understands the changes they make when they do this either".

hearing this from someone well-regarded in our field would have been actively detrimental to getting us to where we are today.

because we guarantee you that for every do-ho-ho bumbling mediocre guy who goes "lol, nobody understands $thing" there is at least one person who does, cleaning up after the messes that this type of fucking guy leaves behind.
