What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

RE: hachyderm.io/@conjured_ink/115

I’m gonna boost this again cause we really haven’t gotten very many applications but we could really really use the engineering help, esp if you’re an experienced engineer.

We need more help for making @conjured_ink happen—a distributed e-commerce platform for indies that centers creatives and their needs, rather than just funneling them back into more exploitation. We’re also heavily focused on the ability of nsfw creatives to keep doing their work safely, something that is rapidly vanishing.

Open source drive bys are great but having a set of folks who are willing and able to commit to just 5 hours a week would make a world of difference for the project. Please take a look and lmk if you have any questions!

Pay-to-crawl systems have emerged in response to large AI models accessing vast amounts of content as a possible way to help sustain the creation of content online. However, overbroad use of pay-to-crawl could ultimately represent a shift towards a more tightly controlled and monetised content ecosystem.

Read our full issue brief for more! And let us know what you think about pay-to-crawl in the comments!

We’re building a people-first video hosting co-op for the Fediverse—a community-owned alternative to Big Tech streaming.

Now we need your help choosing a name. Vote for the one you love and tell us why. Feedback is not just welcome, it’s foundational. Here are the four names that rose to the top:

  1. Fedeo
  2. Cyan
  3. SharkCat
  4. Vidz

The Federated Video Co-op Initiative was always a working title—accurate, functional, a sturdy Honda Civic of a name—but temporary while we build consensus on branding.

So cast a vote. Share thoughts. Suggest vibes. This is your co-op in the making.

The Steering Committee genuinely invites your feedback as we build a people-first video co-op for the Fediverse—owned by the people who use and support it.

The other day, @noybeu published a great video explaining whats is wrong with the Digital Omnibus, a bundle of laws the EU commission wants to pass quickly in order to weaken the data protection standards the EU previously established in the GDPR.

My favourite quote is what @maxschrems says around minute 42:

When we talk about the AI discussion I usually kind of allude that originally when we came up with all those principles in the eighties in the Council of Europe, the idea was always that we are going to have this big algorithm that is going to suck up all your data, come to weird conclusions, and therefore we need transparency, rectification – we need all these things. And now, exactly at the time when this is the reality then suddenly the argument is we have to get rid of all these rules that were made for exactly this situation. So all this icks me a bit on all of that.
If you read it you sometimes get the idea that the commission wants to get to the AI promised land. And to get there we need to cut right through the whole GDPR.

Next week, NOYB will publish the "GDPR Reform Report" with more details.

"You cannot rely on a conforming implementation [of a C compiler] to reject non-conforming [C] code" might be the saddest thing I've learned about coding in C,

but I guess it just shows what they meant when they said "You can't really learn the standard; you have to learn your compiler".

developers: is there a way to get a *raw*, unprocessed video stream for just getting the pixels out of a camera? No Center Stage, no Reactions, no background replacement, and no interaction from the user to allow enabling any of that. Like if I wanted to set up a telescope for astrophotography, weather monitoring, security surveillance, or literally any use case which isn't "pointing the camera at my face for a video call". Is AVFoundation too high-level for this?

There's a nasty worm going around named Shai-Hulud. It's also capable of exposing some projects' long-lived PyPI API Tokens. Read more on what's happening, and what you can do to protect your projects.
