Yesterday l rode my bicycle from Ventura to Santa Barbara. 37ish miles with a mix of beach side bike paths, access roads, commercial streets, residential roads, and some dirt trails. I went through rich neighborhoods, transient hangouts, nature reserves, surfer parking lots, strawberry fields, and horse ranches. I even carried my bike over the Surfliner tracks at one point.

It was an interesting ride! Not the usual fitness grind. I discovered a lot of areas that I see from the freeway usually. Finding my way was a bit complicated though. Lots of stops to look at a map.

Starting point at surfers point in Ventura. A bicycle against a metal barrier with the ocean in the background.Photo shot from a street. The ocean is in the background. Shadow in the foreground as the street passes under a highway.Photo of a bicycle on a dirt trail. Just behind it are railroad tracks. Beyond that hills and a blue sky.A view of the ocean with a bicycle in the foreground.

devs, I need your attention for a minute.

Let's say there would be an open-source project/service that makes it easy to:

- Notarize your Mac apps
- Create & handle updates via Sparkle by hosting them
- Handle payments via Stripe and other payment providers
- Manage/validate licenses

How would you like to use this project/service?

Back in 1999, Bill Gates said that the popular open source operating system Linux was no threat to Windows. He said that Windows offered far more functionality and features than Linux ever would. He argued that Linux lacked a central point of control, as well as the protection, rich set of drivers, and GUI that businesses need. I found this very interesting because most of these things turned out to be false. Funny how things change just under 25 years? LOL. itprotoday.com/linux-os/gates-

Just finished "Enshittification" by @pluralisticCory Doctorow, and despite it not telling me anything new, as I've been following him and this subject for a while, seeing all the case studies, the analysis, and Cory's proposed cure in a succinct, eloquent, and well argued overview was enraging, cathartic, and still hopeful.

I would definitely recommend it to most people, but especially to people who are not as familiar with all the tech nonsense as I am. I have the feeling I will be lending my copy to people regularly.

Oh, and the plug for the fediverse was nice to see.

Masterclass: โ€œColourspaces in D-cinema, ACES, and Streamingโ€

Vancouver, Sat Dec 13, 09:30โ€“17:30.
Presented by Charles Poynton, PhD
Organized by VPA and VES Vancouver
Hosted by Elemental Post

Weโ€™ll explore the theoretical and practical aspects of colourspaces commonly used in production, VFX/CGI, post-production, and presentation of movies, broadcast, streaming video, and games.

VPA, VES Members: $315
Non-Members: $350

Charles Poynton Masterclass: Colourspaces in D-cinema, ACES, and Streaming

In this one-day masterclass, we unpack the colourspaces that drive todayโ€™s professional imaging pipelines โ€“ from camera and VFX working spaces through grading environments to final delivery in cinema, broadcast, UHD/HDR/WCG, and streaming. Weโ€™ll connect the dots between Rec.709/BT.1886 SDR monitoring, theatrical P3 grading, Rec.2020 (BT.2020) wide-gamut UHD delivery, and metadata-driven HDR formats such as Dolby Vision. Why are there so many colourspaces in digital cinema/UHD/HDR/WCG/streamingย pipelines?Weโ€™ll break down the distinct requirements โ€“ and colourspaces โ€“ used at each stage:โ€ข Colourspaces for cameras & VFX/CGIโ€ข Colourspaces for grading and look developmentโ€ข Colourspaces for distribution (P3 theatrical, Rec.709/BT.1886 SDR, Rec.2020 HDR)โ€ข Colourspaces for presentation/display, including HDR10, HLG, and Dolby VisionYouโ€™ll see how scene-referred camera spaces and ACES working spaces are transformed intoย display-referred deliverables for:โ€ข D-cinema masters in P3 (typically P3-D65 or P3-DCI)โ€ข Broadcast and streaming SDR in Rec.709 with a BT.1886 (โ‰ˆ2.4) EOTFโ€ข UHD/HDR streaming that often uses P3 primaries in a Rec.2020 container with PQ or HLG transfer functions, including Dolby Vision trims and metadata.Who this masterclass is for:โ€ข Cinematographers & DITsโ€ข Colourists & colour assistantsโ€ข Studio colour scientistsโ€ข VFX supervisors & colour-pipeline TDsโ€ข Post-production supervisorsโ€ข Lighters, shaders, look developersWhat youโ€™ll learn:Weโ€™ll explore both the theoretical and practical aspects of the colour spaces most commonly used in production, post-production, and presentation of movies, broadcast, streaming video, and games. You will:โ€ข Understand why the requirements at capture, grading, and delivery are different, and how the transforms among camera, ACES, P3, Rec.709, and Rec.2020 spaces are managed.โ€ข Gain a deep understanding of power-function (โ€œgammaโ€) and logarithmic/quasi-log (โ€œlogโ€) encoding, and how they relate to BT.1886 (2.4) and 2.6 gamma reference environments.โ€ข Learn how OpenEXR, CTL, ACES, and OpenColorIO are used to implement and standardize transforms between scene-referred and display-referred colourspaces.โ€ข Understand the implications of sRGB, 2.2, 2.4 (BT.1886), and 2.6-gamma viewing for SDR monitoring, and how they contrast with HDR10, PQ, HLG, and Dolby Vision HDR workflows.โ€ข Appreciate why video in distribution is always display-referred โ€“ even when the upstream pipeline is scene-referred โ€“ and what that means when mastering for P3 cinema, Rec.709 SDR, and Rec.2020/PQ or Dolby Vision HDR deliverables.Lots of graphs and equations will be shown and explained. If you have first-year university math,ย youโ€™ll be able to dive deeply into log coding, the CIE chromaticity diagram, and the geometry of colour gamuts such as P3 and Rec.2020. If your background is high-school math, weโ€™ll still cover the necessary fundamentals, so you come away with a solid working understanding of modern colourspaces and HDR/SDR systems.About Charles PoyntonCharles Poynton, PhD, is an independent researcher in image and colour science based in Toronto, Canada. He specializes in the physics, mathematics, engineering, and algorithms of digital colour imaging systems, with particular focus on digital cinema, HDR/WCG, and modern distribution systems such as Dolby Vision and HDR streaming platforms.

ServerSide.Swift was another conference taking place in a museum, the Science Museum in London.
I had to go back during the weekend to visit the Mathematics and Information Age halls.
The later hosts an interesting series of computers.

Here is the Control Data 6600, probably the first successful super computer.
Designed by Seymour Cray, it is considered one of the first RISC architecture.
I โค๏ธ the design of the screens, it reminds me of foldable opera glasses.
