What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

Why the #OMN works with #ActivityPub – And why we need a bridge to #p2p

Hamish Campbell @info@hamishcampbell.com

Let's look at this. #ActivityPub is not a product. It’s not even really a “protocol” in the narrow, rigid sense that vertical tech likes to imagine. ActivityPub is a shared vocabulary, a public language for moving meaning and connection across the #openweb. It gives you nouns and verbs, and the community defines the grammar through lived use. This is why the #OMN works with ActivityPub, a metadata and meaning layer, not a platform, flows, not silos. ActivityPub is the widely deployed […]

I sometimes see people describing resistance to LLM assisted coding as gatekeeping and I get that, software engineering culture is absolutely rife with gatekeeping, I quite literally dedicated dedicated my career to developer education because I want more people to have access to these opportunities.

But here's the thing, in order to fully participate in the world of software you will still need to learn to code, giving people the impression that isn't the case is not empowering.

“Born Again”, Daredevil #227–233 (1986) — Miller/Mazzucchelli is saturated with Matt’s struggle to restore order and faith in institutions, and see that the rule of law prevails. I don't know if it will, but I hope so, given the way this US Supreme Court was.. "installed".. shall we say.

cover of Daredevil issue #232, giant background of angry Kingpin face with US flag makeup, looming over a row of flames, with Daredevil in stark relief directly at the front. That's the law, and it has to hold.

Gaza's Health Ministry reported that nearly 4,000 glaucoma patients in Gaza are at risk of losing their vision due to due to a lack of treatment options and a limited number of surgical procedures.

Damaged diagnostic and surgical equipment made operations more difficult and increased waiting times, while medication supplies for eye conditions remain critically low. The ministry called for urgently delivering essential diagnostic tools and specialized eye medicines.

i've been growing pre 1800's apples and i confirmed i'm not allergic to raw apples pre 1800. there's a genetic bottleneck for all modern apples around 1800 that bred out the phenolic acid, the lack of phenolic acid makes my tongue itchy and my throat swell up. but this orleans reinette i grew didn't cause any allergic reaction to me. i've grafted a bunch of other pre 1800s varietals and i'm converting my front lawn into an apple dominant food forest style garden with berries and perennial edible plants. i have twelve different apple seedling trees and i'll graft some into frankentrees with many apple varietals on one tree.

Petition in Germany to recognize unpaid contribution to free and open source software projects as 'society-beneficial volunteering' (ehrenamt)!

This will give volunteering for e.g. @postmarketOS , @freifunk , @kde , @nextcloudNextcloud 📱☁️💻 , @Mastodon and other libre projects the same legal status as taking care of an elderly family member or volunteering for a youth association, which provides tax benefits and relaxes requirements for receiving unemployment benefits.

My husband and I were reminiscing about music we listened to as teens. We each had a similar experience with a kind older relative (his grandpa, my aunt), who took us to a record store and said, "Why don't you pick out five albums? We'll listen together, so I can know what young people are listening to these days." Like a kid in a candy shop: a teen in a record shop.

What albums would you have chosen as a teenager?

I have kinda bad RSI, and the RSI is far more pronounced for clicking than it is for typing (and even more pronounced than that for heavy scrollwheel use).

I wonder if I could alleviate the RSI any if I could somehow find a mouse that lets me click with my thumb.

SEMIBOVEMQUE VIRUM SEMIVIRUMQUE BOVEM

Classical poet Ovid once asked each one of his friends to choose, from a poem of him, three verses they considered the worst and that were to be deleted; also, he told them that he also had chosen three verses himself that were not to be deleted, no matter what. When they finally met, it was found that everyone, even Ovid himself, had selected the same three verses. Seneca the Elder tells this story to explain that authors know the problems about their own works, but that they don't bother to fix them. He does not explain further if this is because creators know better or because they are arrogant boneheads.

There is a different telling of this story that says that, when everybody met, nobody had chosen the same verses; because of this, after deletion, the poem was left with only three lines, the ones chosen by Ovid. He was not upset, though, because he saw it coming: the slaughtered text showed Latin words for "My friends are a bunch of hateful motherfuckers".

Any tip for storing jail data and config outside of the jail?.

One thing that happened to me today:
Had a config dir mounted in my DNS jail on /var/unbound.

Destroyed the jail, re-created it: the config that I stored outside got overwritten.

Of course I could have mounted the directory as read only, but I'm more like wondering if the whole approach is just wrong

@aparrishallison if i understand right, if you're in deep space, ice should be one of the hardest substances around. as you approach absolute zero it has a hardness of 19, twice that of diamond. it would make absolute sense to use as a building material for spaceships or on deep space asteroids

@mcc now i'm imagining a roland emmerich-style film in which an interplanetary disaster forces us to abandon earth and colonize the outer solar system. under pressure to build infrastructure as quickly and expertly as possible, the world's governments have no choice but to put humanity's fate in the hands of a ragtag band of ice hotel architects and traditional inuit builders

RFC: what are the highlights of FreeBSD 15.0-RELEASE?

"In the 15.0-RELEASE announcement email, I list a few highlights. Obviously pkgbase is going to be one of them, but I'm looking for a list of 5 or 6 items, and I don't know what you as users care about the most.

"So… can you help out your release engineer and tell me what you personally thing is the most exciting change in 15.0?"

― Colin Percival at <reddit.com/r/freebsd/comments/>

(The announcement is scheduled for Tuesday 2nd December – <freebsd.org/releases/15.0R/>.)

I’m so stucked… Black Friday reactivated the “store everything on a NAS” project in my poor brain. As the goal is quite simple : reduce to the minimum the use (and the costs) of our family iCloud plan, you would expect the solution is simple (of course not…). But should also be added to the equation the need to secure data already on external usb disks. (And aging). So, the quest for the right choice begins with a Nas appliance. Syno? No thanks, solid software, old hardware and discutable moves to lock everyone to use their parts catalog. So… considered ugreen Nas such as dxp2800 (two disks, not very upgradable so use huge capacity for a start). Dxp4800 four bays so it is possible to gradually extend the pool in the future. Then there is also MiniPC with nvme slots such as beelink Me Mini. In all cases, storage will be ZFS and data should be encrypted (don’t want thieves to read my data). Software will likely be truenas. A bare FreeBSD would be great but I have no time or skills to build everything from scratch with the insurance that I don’t leave some door opened for exploits. Either ugreen and N100 based pc should be enough for immich and one or two lightweight containers/jails. Costs are also to be considered, as RAM and disks (and NVME) are becoming very pricey. I read some blogs articles from our barista and of course it was so very interesting to build a backup server, remote access in a diy manner, (the geek in me was very tempted, but the end-user in me having to ensure the data from everybody in the house is secured is worried)
