A short tale from way back when I worked at Apple: My team had a lot of lunchtime meetings and they usually got pizza to feed us lunch while we worked. There were two of us on the team who were vegetarian, so they'd order six or eight pizzas for the team and all of them would have meat except for the one meatless pizza they had for just the two of us. But everyone likes vegetarian pizza, so people would get in line, take what looked good which included the veggie pizza, and by the time I got to the veggie pizza it would be gone and I'd have no lunch (and the other vegetarian had the same problem, of course). They tried to get the non-vegetarian people to stop eating the veggie pizza, then tried to hide it so only we veggies could get it, but nothing worked. So I suggested they order four kinds of vegetarian pizzas and a couple pizzas with meat, and that worked out great and there was much rejoicing.

In a partnership with Mistral AI, CNRS is deploying a locally-hosted LLM chatbot for its employees.

They provide some examples of tasks you can ask the chatbot: summarizing a long text; translating; and writing an outline for an article.

Tasks you'd want to delegate to an assistant because they're beneath you.

And then they decided it would be a great idea to "honor" Emmy Noether, one of the most influential women mathematicians ever, by naming this chatbot Emmy after her.

I cannot fully express how angry that makes me.

Can't be arsed to read something yourself? Ask good old Emmy to summarize it for you, that's right up her alley, she'll do it between proving two major results in algebra or mathematical physics, too bad she's only a website and can't make you a cup of coffee while she's at it.

alan-poc.dsi.cnrs.fr/accueil/i (in French)

Edited to add: given the URL, looks like it's Turing whose memory they first wanted to "honor" mastodon.opportunis.me/@olasd/

You might think it's not a priority with all the doom happening around.

But the erosion of privacy rights is directly linked to the erosion of human rights, and the loss of democracy.

Privacy makes it safe for you to discuss, to organize, to resist, and to be your true self. This is exactly why fascists and authoritarians are attacking it.

If we lose privacy, we lose everything else. We have to defend it with all we've got.

Privacy rights are a priority.

"The law of war is a delusion designed by great powers by their servant lawyers & diplomats so that it will never hinder their military ambitions."

"There's so much wriggle room... by the major powers... that their own troops will, by & large, not fall foul of it."

Eg, Nuremberg didn't prosecute Gรถring for bombing civilians, bcz "they were afraid he'd run the 'You did it too' defence."

"Bcz there's no clear law against it."

@mcc GMP used to use none-vendor-os to disable its compiling for a specific processor. That is not compile to use AVX2 even if you are compiling on an AVX2 machine. This is useful for packagers of say GCC which uses GMP.

Every astronomer who complains about satellite streaks has heard the same response from techbro-types: "Why don't you just put all your telescopes in space?"

There are an incredibly large number of reasons why that is totally not going to work. But here's another from Borloff et al "Satellite megaconstellations will threaten space-based astronomy"

The weather forecast for the day said rain from dusk until dawn with medium wind, no sunlight. There was a time when I would have stayed on the couch, just to get sad in the evening because I did not take any photos. Sure, a bit of sunlight would be nice, but on the other hand you get nicer color and don't have to spend time fixing blown out skies. I even was lugging the tripod around, although I'm more of a freehand photographer. I didn't use it for this image, it's somewhere around ISO2000, but it doesn't matter much when you have a lot of natural noise aka fog.
But the best thing about these days when the Jack Wolfskin crowd stays at home: It feels like having the whole world to yourself. I was out for about 4 hours and met one hiker. We smiled and nodded at each other. โ˜บ๏ธ

I'm a member of the Boulder Valley School District's "District Accountability Committee" or DAC. Each school in the district has a representative that meets once a month at district headquarters to hash out policy, budget, and other recommendations to the school board.

At last night's DAC meeting, during the Q&A period following our Superintendent's briefing (in which he brought up the ongoing problem of kids vaping in school bathrooms), I mentioned an amazing talk I saw at this past @defcon called "Unmasking the Snitch Puck: The creepy IoT surveillance in the school bathroom" - video here: youtube.com/watch?v=WCnojaEpF2I

You see, New Vista High School, which just opened a brand new building, has installed these devices, called a Halo 3C Smart Sensor, in all the bathrooms and elsewhere inside the school building, and has made a measurable impact reducing the number of vaping-in-school incidents. But, as I told superintendent Anderson, the sensor itself brings along with it some seriously problematic security vulnerabilities, in addition to the undocumented capabilities that the researchers in the talk exploited.

The superintendent's response to that made the whole room bust out laughing: "Andrew, you never fail to bring to my attention things that scare the hell out of me" - to which I responded, literally my job, Rob. It's why they call it "Threat Research" my guy.

This is why every community board, council, committee, etc. needs a thoughtful hacker present, to relay important information like this to policy implementers and policy makers who just don't keep up with this space.

Another canary in the collapsing coalmine.

A paper today in Nature by Borlaff et al. on the impact of ever-increasing numbers of satellites in low-Earth orbit on space telescopes like Hubble, SPHEREx, & CHEOPS today, & Xuntian & ARRAKIHS in the future.

The number of proposed satellites is eye-watering, & the effects on astronomy horrendous โ€“ there are wider effects on pollution of the upper atmosphere & safety of key orbital assets as well.

I've had a lot of financial setbacks this year. Ripped off several times on my way out of the US. Medical emergency and follow-up appointments that had to be paid for out of pocket. Higher costs than anticipated due to Masters dragging on and tying me down past the best time to leave.

I try hard to keep costs low. I walk in a lot of pain sometimes so I can avoid paying for transportation.

I'd really appreciate whatever help you could spare trying to get an accessible ride again.

The point to donating to this trike crowdfund on is that Bandcamp waives its fees for me on that day. Only PayPal will charge me a fee. So that increases the amount of money from a music purchase that goes to me and this recumbent crowdfund.

So this Friday, December 5th, if you're able to donate to help a disabled geezette like me out, I would so appreciate it. meganlynch.bandcamp.com/album/

@nedbatNed Batchelder @vossisbossMeagen Voss YES!

I think that's maybe what bugs me about trying to bypass the process altogether.

There is genuine value in learning how to communicate effectively and clearly. Reading through your own drafts, identifying holes in logic or continuity, and sometimes mulling over a specific word that needs tweaking for a specific context--this is an empathetic endeavor (whether conscious or subconscious) toward your reader. It is communal!

And many times, that process uncovers some things you may have overlooked or taken for granted in the past. (This happens every time I try to find how many "just" or "simply" I put in my technical writeups.)

It is unfortunate that this process lacks value for those who would otherwise offload a large part of it to the LLMs.
