懺悔します

こんな時間に腹が減りすぎて、炊飯器の中の冷や飯をしゃもじ1杯ラップにとって塩をジャリっとかけてくるんで軽く握ってレンチンしたものをぺろりと食べました:yotimu_nomming:

Though a bit niche, my today is ed(1). As the goofball behind @ed1confed(1) conference, I certainly play it up, but I certainly use it more than the average Unix/BSD/Linux user.

A while ago I wrote up list of reasons¹ why one might use ed, and some are more obscure/improbable reasons (though I've encountered all of them in that post), there are a couple of those that drive me back to ed regularly:

• I can still see the output of previous commands on the screen while I edit, where a full-screen editor would obscure that output that I need to incorporate in my edit

• it's just darn fast for a quick edit, changing a variable name or adding/removing an entry in a list, etc. No startup costs for a honkin' huge $VISUAL with dozens of plugins and language-server processes and GUI rendering

• very usable on low-bandwith/high-latency connections like I sometimes get when I remote into machines (less of a problem now, but I still experience sessions where I'll SSH in, invoke ed, make the change, write & quit, and exit the shell, in a couple seconds, while the screen repaints things oh-so-slowly

• and most importantly, there's quality geek-cred for using it in front of others 😆

I once had a friend tell me, "Perfection is a realistic goal." That really startled me.

His argument was that if you're not aiming for perfection, then you're aiming for less than perfection. Whatever you're aiming for is the best you can achieve.

That said, I rejected the idea.

Perfect attendance. Perfect grades. Perfect record.

Perfection is a toxic, mushy ideal. It is generally used be authorities to judge others, not to achieve worthwhile outcomes.

In the past few days I’ve seen talk about RAM prices shooting up due to demand from big datacenters.

Today I read that a historic brand like Crucial - I own plenty of their hardware, including SSDs - is dropping consumer products to focus on gear for those same datacenters.
The result (or maybe the intention?) is to push people away from self hosting, undermine the OwnYourData idea and make everyone depend on huge datacenters for life.

So much for owning your data.
So much for decentralisation.

Because taking down one giant datacenter is far easier than taking down thousands or millions of individual nodes.

Friends and colleagues, don’t trade your freedom for a bit of convenience. Once you give it away, getting it back is very hard.

Always Own Your Data.

@stefanoStefano Marinelli Totally agree and I wanna add that often you don't even to self host to Own Your Data, you can start small with stuff such as:
- backing up your photo on your desktop/laptop using the gold old cable and an app supporting PTP protocol (Windows and Mac have at least one preinstalled while on BSD and Linux you have many options to download from package repositories), no iCloud or Google Photos needed
- choosing DRM free ebooks, music and games and keeping a backup of them
- using Syncthing to sync your data across devices

maybe this still doesn’t make sense, idk. i’m just saying atproto by its nature is the most “shareable” kind of database because everyone who cares about some lexicon needs essentially the same table
