Because I have an impression that too many people simply don’t understand what exactly #EuropeanUnion fined #Twitter and #Meta for and uncritically internalised the US narrative of “censorship”, I’ve asked… Grok. Here’s the bottom line:

No, the fines had nothing to do with #censorship - they were for a massive flood of scam and fake accounts, that is bot farms. Plus some B2B monopolistic abuse (DMA).

Here’s more details from Grok:

Short summary of 2025 EU fines on Big TechX (Twitter) – €120 million (Dec 2025)

  • For misleading paid blue checks, blocking researcher data access, and a broken ad transparency tool (DSA violations).
  • Meta – €200 million (Apr 2025) + ongoing cases

Main fine: “pay or consent” model violates DMA (forces users to pay or allow full tracking). Additional DSA probes for poor content moderation, researcher access, and blocking rival AI chatbots in WhatsApp.

I am really saddened looking through issue trackers and finding how many people have done things like `pip install` to get Calibre dependencies, then been sad when nothing works. The fact that it's so far from standard build tooling has consequences, even if it's an understandable part of being a long-running project with a history.

Ceasefire not delivering on its promises across Gaza

Israel is not abiding by the terms of the ceasefire agreement.

At least 600 trucks should be entering the Gaza Strip every day, but what is entering is very little.

Cooking gas is only at 16 percent of what is needed; there is a shortage of shelters, tents, tarps and everything Palestinians need to shelter from the rain.

We see Palestinians collecting wood, cartons and anything they can light a fire with.

Sunday morning mini-project. (Not pictured: Saturday we prototyped the idea with cardboard and hot glue.) Materials: chopstick, toothpicks, and some light wood from the hardware store left over from a pre ious project.

Small woodworking tools (some very small) arrayed on the floor, together with some small pieces of wood, a jar of toothpicks, and some quantity of sawdust.A wooden construction in my hand. Palestinians have the right to stay in their own land: Qatar’s PM

When asked why Qatar would help pay for the reconstruction of Gaza, which has been destroyed by a country which also bombed Qatar, Qatar’s PM said there are double standards at play because if “you say that Israel has a responsibility to rebuild what it has destroyed, they will tell you, no”.
