Ah christ. My husband's suggested I paint a fucking pipe organ.

And I thought my brother was mean with the tuba suggestion (if you have noticed that's not actually what tubas look like no you didn't. I lost track of the swirls and made it up)

@catsaladCat 🐈🥗 (D.Burch) :paw::paw: Leafcutter ants (according to Wikipedia) are tiny but carry far more than their weight. They’re symbiotic with fungus, which they farm and protect from pests.

They prefer disturbed habitats, which is where a change in environmental conditions causes a pronounced change in an ecosystem.

@postmarketOS is a colony of leafcutter ants.

My girlfriend abandoned me in bed despite my cries and whimpers and pleas for cuddling. She didn’t even pull a switcheroo, swapping a Blahåj for a Becca in my arms, and instead coldly laughed at my suffering and left the room. I am blaming Tim and Craig for turning her into a heartless, soulless capitalist.

"Goodhart’s Law is really a statement about the process of trying to make policy based on proxy measures of “internal states of complex systems” which are not themselves directly observable. "

Got to this piece from a link from Ben Recht and it finally nailed something that's always bothered me about the constant reference to Goodhart's law across software.

Alright, I finished my first proper blog post about selective applicative functors!

I lay out the theoretical basis for them and how I claim they should model control flow with exclusive determined choice (which is something the existing formulation failed to capture)

blog.veritates.love/selective_

the key insight necessary to make it work for N-ary branching is to consider arrows (composable profunctors) instead of functors in isolation, because casing on an Either is about the domain not the codomain

the resulting structure is related to near-semirings, but in a different way than Alternative is (as that encodes nondeterministic choice)

The UK Online Safety Act is a mess. MPs are debating the petition for its repeal now.

ORG calls for a rights-based approach:

Limit its scope to minimise threats to freedom of expression/small sites, and regulate age verification providers to protect privacy.

Half my German colleagues are dropping like flies from an apparently heavily mutated Influenza A variant. Most did not get vaccinated (neither against flu nor Covid), and most had Covid in the last couple of months. I fear this season is going to hit hard. And everyone is going to be surprised of why people are getting so sick and take ages to recover…
By the way - masks also help prevent the spread of flu. Just saying…

today I discovered that a whole stack of my personal files, including multiple books I had written and performances recorded, were no longer on my hard drive, because Windows had deleted them "to free up space" and only kept the copies on their onedrive server. That's not a backup. That's deleting my work without asking me. I'm switching to Linux.

My reaction: JFC

A landmark study by epidemiologist Sam Goldman compared Marines stationed at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina, where trichloroethylene (TCE) had contaminated the water supply for approximately 35 years, against those at Camp Pendleton in California, which has clean water. Marines exposed to TCE at Lejeune were 70% more likely to develop Parkinson's.

The latest research suggests only 10 to 15 percent of Parkinson's cases can be fully explained by genetics. Parkinson's rates in the US have doubled in the past 30 years -- a pattern inconsistent with an inherited genetic disease. The EPA moved to ban TCE in December 2024. The Trump administration moved to undo the ban in January.

News spreads like wildfire via private messages from neighbor to neighbor, and there’s •so• much that’s no making the news:

Person abducted on this block. Convoy of ICE vehicles spotted on this street. Observer shoved by ICE. Person abducted on that block. Observer threatened with a weapon by ICE.

ALL DAY EVERY DAY

And also, again and again — people need to know this! — I get these messages too:

ICE started to gather, but dispersed when too many observers showed up.

ICE vehicle headed back to base after being tailed in circles for an hour.

ICE started abducting someone, but let them go as the gathered crowd got larger and larger.

These people •really• do not want to be observed. Typical bullies: they cosplay tough guys, they waggle their gear around, but they •behave• like they’re afraid.
