The audacity of saying you have rights to output after employment is sure treading on the ground of indentured servitude.

I appreciate all the legal thoughts laid out here in this piece (via @wdlindsyWilliam Lindsey :toad:), and yes, Congress and all the relevant parties should move in all these fronts.

I find it hard, however, to take completely seriously a legal strategy document of this length that (1) imagines Congress doing any of this and (2) mentions the SCOTUS only twice, and then only in reference to its past upholding of law. I’m not convinced this is a piece that fully appreciates the severity of the current situation and the degree of institutional rot.

The simulation hypothesis — the idea that our universe might be an artificial construct running on some advanced alien computer — has long captured the public imagination. Yet most arguments about it rest on intuition rather than clear definitions, and few attempts have been made to formally spell out what “simulation” even means. In a new paper, SFI Professor David Wolpert introduces a mathematically precise framework for what it would mean for one universe to simulate another — and shows that several longstanding claims about simulations break down once the concept is defined rigorously.

Just had someone leave feedback on my F/OSS project saying “maybe that's fine if a product is focused on your Chinese community.”

I'm Korean. Every single piece of documentation is in English. There's nothing in Chinese anywhere in the project.

This kind of microaggression is exhausting. As a non-white maintainer, you deal with these assumptions constantly—people who feel entitled to your labor while casually othering you based on your name.

It chips away at your motivation. It makes you wonder why you bother.
