What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

Have you ever noticed that the food graphics in Super Smash Bros. and Kirby Air Riders is flat “billboarded” stock images of food? This artistic decision from director Masahiro Sakurai has persisted through 8 games over nearly 25 years.

While researching every game with this art style and all 150+ unique food images I ended up fixing wikis, reviewing a seasonal KitKat flavor, and preserving an uncatalogued image of tempura soba.

Sorry for the wait, but Ivory v2.4 is finally available on the App Store! Features support for the official quote posts (assuming your server is running Mastodon 4.5 or later) and we've made big improvements to fetching replies and post metadata in the post detail views.

All of this resonated for me, but I think this is important to keep hold of, as well:

"One of the great gifts of working in technology is that it’s given so many of us the habit of constantly learning, of always being curious and paying attention to the new things worth discovering."

It really can be a gift, and that's worth thinking about.

Mastodon's verification system is mainly for people and organisations who who have their own website. It makes your Mastodon profile's link to your website turn green, proving you are the owner of the site.

Here's how to verify your account:

➡️ fedi.tips/how-do-i-verify-my-a

If you've tried doing this and it didn't work, see the troubleshooting section of the guide ("My website address won’t turn green!") as there are lots of possible ways you might fix it.

RE: mastodon.social/@Mastodon/1157

Something I like about and the as a whole is how it highlights the importance of community. A lot of these server owners are running these servers out of pocket because they love the idea of supporting a community. It takes all of us to keep the fediverse running, so don't forget to donate to your smaller servers as well!

RE: hachyderm.io/@molly0xfff/11584

Always a good time to start your own blog. And if you're worried about not having anything interesting to write about, here's a story I like to share when that comes up.

"A funny thing happens with history in that the most mundane, ubiquitous parts of daily life are the things that we've kind of lost the most because nobody wrote about them."

I’ve been doing Hungryroot every other week for a few months and I feel like I’m going to stick with it for the foreseeable future unlike Hello Fresh because I feel like it’s actually helping me lose weight, it makes it super easy to meal plan, I get to customize every item (not just meal but each item) in my order if I want, I often get grocery items that last multiple weeks not tiny portions just for that meal, and I like that they include vegan items and items from minority owned businesses

Linux desktop voice control has a gap. Talon costs money. Other tools are X11-only or cloud-dependent.

So I built EasySpeak.

https://x.com/hazuma/status/2007479562461163555

Morning thought: What if the earth had a massive ocean sized air pocket hiding in the crust somewhere that gradually opened up and released causing the oceans to recede by a hundred feet, which in turn cause the coastlines to expand around the entire world over the course of a year?

Social media fucks with our heads because here, those two places are the same.

And that is not about control. It's about user interface choices.

Specifically, when I step on my soap box and announce the contents of this thread loudly to passers-by, your experience of it is me breaking down your door, standing next to your sofa, and shouting this in your face.

In other words, you're in a safe, accepting environment, in which you open yourself to affirming interactions, while I'm actively...

... prepared for non-accepting interactions.

This is because the norm for user interfaces for social media makes no distinction between the "places" in which I produce content and you consume it.

Contrast this to e.g. blogs. You can consume them on your sofa just fine, via an RSS feed, just like you might subscribe to a physical newspaper. But when you want to react to this, you have to go to the speaker's soap box and comment there. Or you have to step on our own soap box, and phrase your...

[Veille 📣] How We Lost Communication to Entertainment
ploum.net/2025-12-15-communica
