mozilla: we just don’t know how to satisfy our users’ demands for “no AI”, after all what is AI? translation? spellchecking? TLS? if we start slopcoding features will they demand we disable those too? so many gray areas!

firefox users: if it’s not core browsing functionally make it an add-on that isn’t installed by default. and then consider not writing the add-on if it turns out nobody wants it.

mozilla: I know what I’ll do! I’ll write a poll where one of the options is 🤷, that’ll fix it!

Firefox uses on-device downloaded-on-demand ML models for privacy-preserving translation.

They're not LLMs. They're trained on open data.

Should translation be disabled if the AI 'kill switch' is active?

#Russia has just officially closed the criminal investigation of the #Azerbaijan Airlines Flight 8243 their air defense downed over #Grozny in December 2024. Prosecutor’s General office simply states:

It has been established that the aircraft departed at 06:55 (Moscow time) from Baku airport to Grozny airport. Due to weather conditions (cloudiness), after two unsuccessful attempts, the crew was unable to land at Grozny airport, made a decision to proceed to another airport, and during the approach to landing at Aktau airport at approximately 9:28 (Moscow time) collided with the ground, resulting in the destruction of the aircraft and fire, as a result of which 38 people died and 29 received injuries of varying severity.

The fact that the aircraft has been hit by two surface-to-air rockets fired from Russian “Pantsir-S1” system on the ground is not even mentioned and instead they push some bullshit about “weather conditions”, which undoubtedly will be received as an insult by Azerbaijan - which it is.

@zkatkat I've long felt that, just like we have a plethora of standard licenses to pick from, we should also have more named and documented governance models, because these two are separate dimensions that tell you something about the "openness" of a project.

You can be closed source but with community (led or involved) governance, you can be (corporate) open source without any community involvement at all, and many shades between. This wouldn't be captured in the license, but in some kind of governance contract with the community.

"It’s All About the Oil, Stupid!”

"With his claims of U.S. sovereignty over nations in the Western Hemisphere, Trump’s basically saying, 'Well, this is ours, and China, Russia can have their spheres of influence.' And it is very 19th-century-esque. ’Let’s divide up the world between the powers.'"

CES 2026 Day-1

The more you understand SVG, the less software you need to create it.

I just produced some logo deliverables by coding them directly by hand, and the result is much so better and cleaner than all my previous attempts in Inkscape (a disaster) or Penpot (much better but still not good enough).

To export them as PNGs, I simply display them on a web page and use the browser's screenshot function. It works really well and is incredibly satisfying.

I have been trying to figure out what to post here about ICE activity today in the Minneapolis / St. Paul metro. It is just •batshit• out there.

Some admin mucky-muck is in town today (Noem, I think?), and ICE is putting on a full We Are A Big Fascist Deal theater show. The result of this is chaos: ICE caravans all over, vulnerable people terrified, less-vulnerable residents dropping their work to keep watch on the streets.
