One of the biggest reasons why I left Spotify (this was after they gave Joe Rogan a truckload of money, and tried to embrace/extinguish podcasts, but before they played ICE ads and before I discovered their CEO invests in killer drones) was because they were padding their LoFi playlists with garbage AI slop attributed to fictitious artists, bands, and labels. They were obviously doing this to avoid paying out any money to artists despite continual playback.

Spotify is 100% leaning hard into AI. They have an “AI DJ” that “curates” your music. They are replacing artists with AI slop. It’s all part of their grand enshittification. @halvahalvawawa mk.absturztau.be/notes/ahf6b9v

USPolitics

I really want to coach people who are standing up to ICE like… yeah “Where is the paperwork” and “They’re a US citizen!” *are* critiques and begin to address the problem but… correct forms wouldn’t make the kidnapping and terrorism ok and maybe *no one* should be kidnapped even if they <gasp> aren’t US citizens!

Complaints

The previous evening I listened to a piece by Dvorak, and basically woke this morning with this John Barry masterpiece in the head, for the whole day. This brain makes connections… go figure !

an unfortunate number of people have told me that they recently walked by me on campus and I didn't say anything.

but, like, if I have to look at every face passing by and figure out who they are, I don't think I can do anything else. this sounds really stressful.

I'll just be walking around in my own little thought bubble. anyone wants to chat, they better flag me down or say something...

Independent origins of spicules reconcile paleontological and molecular evidence of sponge evolutionary history science.org/doi/10.1126/sciadv by Maria Eleonora Rossi et al.

"the first sponges were soft-bodied and lacked mineralized skeletons. That's why we don't see sponge spicules in rocks from around 600 million years ago—there simply weren't any to preserve... spicules evolved independently in different sponge groups"

A collage of four pictures. Three are underwater photos of sponges and the fourth contains electron microscopy pictures of their skeletal structures of various mostly symmetrical shapes.

Text contrast that’s hard to read. Menus that are inconsistent and hard to interpret. Windows that are hard to resize.

Engineers who don't agree with a design decision will do as little work as possible to make it look “as designed”. In this context, having it not work right is a feature.

I’m guessing there are folks at Apple who are very happy to see all these critiques of macOS Tahoe.
