What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

You know that thing where you say something to a friend and then a few minutes later you get an ad for it on your phone?

That has NEVER happened to me.

Another future is possible. Some of us are already living in it. More should join in. It's better here. More connective, less destructive.

One of the biggest statistical biases one encounters when trying to assess the true success rate of AI tools is the strong reporting bias against disclosing negative results. If an individual or AI company research group applies their AI tool to an open problem, but makes no substantial progress, there is little incentive for the user of that tool to report the negative statement; furthermore, even if such results are reported, they are less likely to go "viral" on social media than positive results. As a consequence, the results one actually hears about on such media is inevitably highly skewed towards the positive results.

With that in mind, I commend this recent initiative of Paata Ivanisvili and Mehmet Mars Seven to systematically document the outcomes (both positive and negative) of applying frontier LLMs to open problems, such as the Erdos problems: mehmetmars7.github.io/Erdospro

As one can see, the true success rate of these tools for, say, the Erdos problems is actually only on the level of a percentage point or two; but with over 600 outstanding open problems, this still leads to an impressively large (and non-trivial) set of actual AI contributions to these problems, though overwhelmingly concentrated near the easy end of the difficulty spectrum, and not yet a harbinger that the median Erdos problem is anywhere within reach of these tools.

This is probably not going to work, but I'll give it a try anyway.

Who wants to adopt this pet project? :boost_ok:
personal pickup only. It cannot be shipped.

I have this little pet project that has been sitting here for 6 years now. I made it as a prototype for girls day 2020, to teach girls about electronics. Of course girls day 2020 never happened. 😞

Anyway. I spent a couple hundred euros making this thing. There's documentation and replacement parts galore.

For $REASONS I need to get rid of it now. For free.

It's a great project for learning how to code with an Arduino nano, and/or to learn about basic electronics. There's enough material to build a second cube.

I'll probably have to trash the hole thing if nobody wants it 😞

Edit: I'm surprised people are interested 🤩 ... I also have a heavy cardboard box with replacement parts and actually enough parts to build an entire second cube. Also to give away. Ideally to the same person, but if interests differ I'll hand them out separately. Making an 8x8x8 cube is a loooooot of tedious work though!

an 8x8x8 LED cube with blue lights. it has a black electronics compartment with a sticker "code like a girl" and engravings "girls day 2020" on the front. there is also a button to switch animation modes.the bottom of the cube shows a transparent door which can be removed by sliding it out. through the transparent acrylic glass the PCB, Arduino nano and lots of rainbow cables are visible.

My silly 2026 prediction is we'll see a mainstream politician and/or tech elite call for outlawing local compute. This really feels like big tech's end goal—make AI critical infrastructure to run all of our apps, then work towards a cloud-tethered world where local compute is a thing of the past.

This isn't that, obviously. But we know where Bezos' head is at.

My evening thought:

ActivityPub/Mastodon works best for groups of people that share some common interest. People with a "we" attitude. Where we talk eye to eye, not from top to bottom.

Centralised social networks however have made many of us believe that all social networks focus on people with a "me first" attitude. The more egoistic people that base their value on metrics like followers and reach.

That's a fundamental dilemma that pops up every time people move from "there" to "here".

Some good news in a time of darkness: the European wildcat, Felis sylvestris, is making a comeback! This thoughtful-looking example was photographed in a mountainous region of the Czech republic.

The European wildcat's extreme elusiveness may have helped it avoid hunters in places where a larger native cat, the lynx, has been killed off. There may be about 140,000 European wildcats spread across more than two dozen countries. But they are very hard to find!

Wildlife photographer Andrea Giovanni, who made a video of one, writes:

"I'd never even thought of taking photos of wildcats, for a simple reason: I thought it was impossible, or at least, extremely difficult. It's considered 'the ghost of the forests' because it's very, very elusive, and it's hard to predict where it can be spotted. Other animals tend to follow the same trails through the forest. The wildcat goes wherever she wants to."

One reason the European wildcat is coming back is increased legal protections. But another is that villages in Italy and other regions are becoming depopulated! Some are very worried about declining human populations. But it does make room for other species. That gives me some hope for the future.

I got this picture, taken by Vladimír Čech Jr in the Doupov mountains, from a very nice article on the European wildcat:

generalized US legal question: If you don't have a lawyer, and there might come a time in the future when you might want to attend a protest, how would you go about choosing/finding a lawyer you might call if you needed to make a phone call to your lawyer? Is there a particular specialization to look for, or some kind of find-a-lawyer list, or what? Or do you just rely on a public defender to be available?

"...the vast majority of men are only willing to engage in public violence if they feel like the people around them will approve of — and reward them for — that violence.

ICE Watch works because it surrounds men seeking approval with people loudly expressing their disapproval. ...

In Minneapolis ... There are countless videos from ICE Watch observers that show agents leaving without detaining anyone after they encounter resistance."

President Trump announces that from Feb. 1, there’ll be a 10% tariff on all goods from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, UK, Netherlands and Finland, increasing to 25% on June 1, until a deal is reached for the complete and total purchase of Greenland by the US.

“Trump can put a million-percent tariffs on Denmark, and it still doesn't change the answer about Greenland. There are only two possible endings to this bizarre story. Either Trump gives up, or else he goes through with a military invasion.” - Danish military analyst Anders Puck Nielsen
