What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

One way ActivityPub can be extended is โ€” through JSON-LD namespaces.

For example, many Fediverse servers use the following JSON-LD namespace to specify cryptographic public-key(s) for the user.

w3id.org/security/v1

(This particular namespace is an HTTPS URL.)

...

But, does extant Fediverse software support cryptographic public-key(s) well?

Saw a Reddit thread where someone asked what would happen if a personal wealth cap of $100M was introduced.

The comments were entirely full of people gleefully calling the poster dumb and going to great lengths to argue how nothing can ever be changed about wealthy people being wealthy actually, because their wealth makes the economy run and that messing with the stock market will break the world.

So many excuses all over for complacency with an economic system that is very much the result of specific policy decisions and doesnโ€™t even do the things itโ€™s supposed to.

Why do people keep hiding behind the economy as if itโ€™s a weird deity?

Tesla convicted 18 times and ordered to pay thousands for failing to help UK police with investigations

In each case, when British police officers tried to track down the details of speeding Tesla drivers, their letters went unanswered and the forces ended up prosecuting the company itself

(EDIT: these cars are owned by Tesla and leased. Cops want to know who was driving at the time of the offense, Tesla wouldn't/couldn't tell them, so got fined.)

Ein Screenshot eines englischsprachigen Nachrichtenartikels mit der Schlagzeile โ€žMicrosoft chief Satya Nadella warns AI boom could falter without wider adoptionโ€œ.

The Minneapolis General Strike, regardless of how successful it turns out to be, is already historic in several ways:

*It's the first General Strike in the U.S. in 80 years.

*It is supported by dozens of mainstream and relatively conservative unions, including the AFL-CIO.

This is significant because General Strikes were made illegal by the Taft-Hartley law that was written after the last one, the Oakland General Strike of 1946. Since then, the mainstream unions have been terrified of the legal consequences and haven't even entertained the thought.

That so many mainstream unions are supporting this General Strike tells us just how terrible conditions are right now in Minneapolis, and the U.S. as a whole, that they feel the legal consequences pale in comparison to the existential threat that Trump's Gestapo and his authoritarian rule pose for us all.

However, to really end fascism in the U.S., it will take more than a 1-day General Strike in just one city. Prolonged General Strikes across the country could achieve this goal. But that should not be the only goal. Because once workers have shut down the profit system for the rich, they can demand, and win, so much more. General Strikes have the potential to become revolutionary.

It is sad that so many liberals, and even many leftists, have been calling for a return to the pre-Trump status quo that was so miserable for the poor and working-class, that supported genocide and U.S. imperialism around the globe, that allowed people to go bankrupt or die of neglect due to the costs of healthcare, that did so little to slow down the climate crisis, that allowed so many marginalized communities to suffer violence and disrespect.

We should be fighting for more. Far more. And hopefully what happens in Minneapolis today will be successful and just the beginning of the start of this.

@lcamtuflcamtuf :verified: :verified: :verified: it occurs to me that part selection (i.e. how to choose a fet) might be an interesting topic. Partially because there are billions of parts available, partially because everyone has different needs, but I'm sure there's stuff that, as an amateur hobbyist, I am missing.
