Money, probably. Netflix also does this, for unilingual shows as well. Maybe a personal curse for speaking 0.8(1+1+1) languages, but man. Whatever AI they cook up, the quality will deteriorate if this stupid policy stays. It still will even if the policy doesn't stay, but that's not the point.
The similarity between Korean and Japanese means there is little concern in terms of character limit as well. A direct translation "차는 미국 대학 졸업 선물로 \ 할아버지께서 사주신 거고" does not violate Netflix's "16 characters per line" guideline at all. This is just ONE example into 21 min into the FIRST episode. Why?
This one line conveys several information, but the Ko sub carries the same omissions as the En sub, notably: 1) He went to a university in the US. 2) The grandfather specifically *bought* a car for him hinting at the generational wealth. All this, gone, presumably due to the character limit.
One example: Dialog "車はアメリカの大学卒業祝いに \ おじい様が買ってくれたものです" ("(The) car is/was (something) (my) grandfather bought (me) as a gift for graduating (from a) university in the US") En sub "the car was a graduation gift \ from my grandfather" Ko sub "차는 할아버지께서 \ 졸업 선물로 주신 거고" (Same as the En sub)
It's well past time the American streaming services should learn English as the "main language" in localization does not work. <Drops of God> is an adaptation of a manga. Japanese can be translated to Korean with minimal changes. Then why the fuck are the Japanese dialogs translated from English?
