@puPatrick

You may need to explain further.

All BSDs have developers all over the place, and mirrors all over, including in the EU.

Both NetBSD & OpenBSD have cute (and probably outdated) little world maps showing where their developers live.

All of them are supported by foundations that collect money & hardware for their devs.

I suspect that if the current US government was to bar access to BSD repos and mirrors, a lot of the foundations would move at least partially to better places.

@puPatrick

This being said, yes, OpenBSD is mostly based in Canada and Theo de Raadt has always had a very uncompromising stance on nonsense coming from the US. Even got in trouble with the US government before.

So OpenBSD is probably your best bet if you want stuff that is "independent" from Trumpolino. And the OpenBSD Foundation is also based in Canada.

Make of that what you will.

그렘린 시스템에서 가장 좋아하는 문장입니다. ridibooks.com/books/347700...

A few days ago, a client’s data center (well, actually a server room) "vanished" overnight. My monitoring showed that all devices were unreachable. Not even the ISP routers responded, so I assumed a sudden connectivity drop. The strange part? Not even via 4G.

I then suspected a power failure, but the UPS should have sent an alert.

The office was closed for the holidays, but I contacted the IT manager anyway. He was home sick with a serious family issue, but he got moving.

To make a long story short: the company deals in gold and precious metals. They have an underground bunker with two-meter thick walls. They were targeted by a professional gang. They used a tactic seen in similar hits: they identify the main power line, tamper with it at night, and send a massive voltage spike through it.

The goal is to fry all alarm and surveillance systems. Even if battery-backed, they rarely survive a surge like that. Thieves count on the fact that during holidays, owners are away and fried systems can't send alerts. Monitoring companies often have reduced staff and might not notice the "silence" immediately.

That is exactly what happened here. But there is a "but": they didn't account for my Uptime Kuma instance monitoring their MikroTik router, installed just weeks ago. Since it is an external check, it flagged the lack of response from all IPs without needing an internal alert to be triggered from the inside.

The team rushed to the site and found the mess. Luckily, they found an emergency electrical crew to bypass the damage and restore the cameras and alarms. They swapped the fried server UPS with a spare and everything came back up.

The police warned that the chances of the crew returning the next night to "finish" the job were high, though seeing the systems back online would likely make them move on. They also warned that thieves sometimes break in just to destroy servers to wipe any video evidence.

Nothing happened in the end. But in the meantime, I had to sync all their data off-site (thankfully they have dual 1Gbps FTTH), set up an emergency cluster, and ensure everything was redundant.

Never rely only on internal monitoring. Never.

Filming Cops For Scared People

When you are filming police try not to talk to them. Avoid:

"Is it OK if I film?" (That isn't up to them.)
"Sorry officer." (You have done nothing wrong don't apologize.)

Try things like.
"I am filming from a safe distance."

If they start yelling at you focus on:

"Am I free to leave?"

Every time I've said this the officer has responded with "shut up" (ok??)
I'm happy to comply with *that* one and keep filming from a safe distance.

This morning in Minneapolis:

Somebody posted in one of the local chats that their neighbor didn’t come home last night, looking for help finding them. Family doesn’t know where they are. They’d been taking the legal path to seek asylum. ICE doesn’t have their name (but that means very little; they hide names, kidnap anonymously, even discard people’s IDs).

Meanwhile, confirmed ICE sightings are ramping up in my area now after some relative early morning quiet.

Just in case you wondered how things are going here.

POINT OF INFORMATION: never talk to cops. especially as a citizen journalist.

set yourself at a safe distance and just film.

people who want to do this regularly, may want to set themselves up with a backpack on their chest to house their phone set up on a selfie stick.

if you are a cyclist, a GoPro on your helmet AND on your bike are good alternatives.

in in particular, it is best to have your hands free.

i should revive my old dos & donts list for indie journos.
