Some nice themes running through the #SocialWeb Devroom at #FOSDEM: storytelling from different national and international contexts (Italy, Netherlands, Germany, Europe); new apps and ideas (badgefed, splinter, FASPs, Spritely); building infrastructure and foundational tech (Bonfire, Fedify, Emissary). This is really great momentum! The speaker list today has been wonderful.

동아시아 불교의 문제들에 대해서, 원시 불교, 상좌부 불교, 티벳 불교 더 나아가 자이나교까지 참고하려는 움직임들이 있는데, 물론 연구 대상으로서 공부할 가치는 있지만 내 단견으로는 다 답은 못 되는 듯 하다. 부처님의 말씀과 우리의 지혜로서 지금의 불교를 고치고 또 고쳐서 새로 만들어내는 수 밖에 없다고 생각한다. 부처님께서 친히 말씀하셨듯이 법을 등으로 삼아 말과 행동 모두 스스로 나아가야 한다.

I saw an interesting post by 
@AstroKatieKatie Mack on Bluesky (where I mostly lurk) and wondered if she cross-posted here (so I could repost). It looks like she stopped posting here in early 2024, despite having an account since 2017.
It makes me sad to see all the interesting people who have tried Fedi but not stuck around. However, I also understand it, because if you're a science communicator you can only accomplish your goal by going where the most people will see and engage with your comments. Fedi, with its smaller number of active users and poor discoverability just doesn't fit the bill. I don't know that that's why she stopped posting here, but it's what I'm guessing.
I wish these sorts of examples would serve as a wake-up call to people who think that Fedi doesn't need to focus on growth, doesn't need to employ any sort of more sophisticated feeds/discoverability, or that people don't stick around only because they didn't give it a fair chance.

불교 이야기: 선불교
불교가 동아시아로 전해지면서 크게 세 줄기로 발전하는데 교종, 선종 그리고 밀교이다. 이 셋은 역사적으로 영향을 주고 받고 섞이기도 했지만 그래도 큰 줄기들은 그렇다. 이 중 선종이 바로 선불교인데 이들은 차안(이 세계)과 피안(이상세계, 열반)을 나누지 않고 현재 세계가 곧 피안이며 우리가 이를 모를 뿐이라고 가르친다. 즉 자기 수행을 통한 현생의 대긍정, 일상의 재인식, 고통의 소멸이 아닌 극복을 추구하는 것이다. "별 일 없다."는 문구가 이를 대표한다.
문제는, 깨달아서 일상이라면 굳이 출가를 해야 하는가? 라는 질문이 나온다는 점이다. 선은 활발발한 것이고 깨달아서 일상으로 돌아간다면 개인이 머리 깎고 승려가 되는, 사회에 승려가 있어야 할 의미는 무엇인가 하는 의문이 생길 수 밖에 없다. 그리고 그러한 현실의 대긍정은 본질적으로 구조주의와 비슷하게 보수적이라는 문제도 있다. 중상류층의 지적 유희, 고통 완화 수단 정도로 전락해버리는 문제는 뿌리가 깊다. 대중의 고통과 요구에 대해서는 밀교나 미륵불 신앙 등의 다른 불교들이 대응하게 된다.
결국 종교로서의 선불교는 스스로 다른 종파와 섞여서 통합 종단으로 남거나, 신유교에 밀려나거나 하여 현재는 불교의 일부로 남아있다. 우상과 신화를 부정하고 현생의 문제에 집중하고자 한 시작은 좋았으나 그래서 농업 중심 전근대 사회에서 어떤 역할을 할 것이라는 비전을 제시하지는 못했던 선불교의 한계는, 탈종교적이고 상업이 성한 현대에서는 다른 의미를 가질 수 있을까. 수행법을 넘어선 삶과 사회의 가치와 지향점을 제시하는 발전을 바란다.

At some point last evening, most of the lights off, I was coming up the stairs, and was meowing at the cat. The cat meowed back, and we were having "a conversation", as you do.
I became aware that the cat was in front of me, but the meowing was coming from further up the stairs.
That's when I realized the cat wasn't saying anything, but my wife and I were meowing at each other, each of us thinking the other was the cat.
