I went on a half-day journey of discovery through QubesOS, LVM, and device-mapper, so that I could get my laptop working again after it rebooted randomly at a very inopportune moment.

Frustrating and scary (this is my main work machine), but I also did learn a bunch.

For example, that LVM is basically an interface over device-mapper, and when something gets fscked in a weird way, you can use dmsetup directly to un-fsck it.

Because a LOT of people are missing the point:

No, Elon Musk is NOT serious about putting a million data centres into orbit. It can't work: laws of physics say "nope".

But SpaceX is expected to go public this year.

Elon is talking up his company's future prospects in front of gullible investors because he needs a growth narrative beyond Starlink, which is already priced in. Something to justify the Starship proram beyond NASA's lunar ambitions.

So it's salesman's bullshit, lies for fools.

"But Wikipedia cannot survive by refusing to change. Ostrom’s Nobel prize-winning research reminds us that the communities that govern shared resources often grow conservative over time.

"For anyone who cares about the future of reliable information online, Wikipedia’s 25th anniversary is not just a celebration. It is an urgent warning about what happens when the institutions we depend on cannot adapt to the people they are meant to serve."

PSA: I don't know if it will do any good, but I have just learned that "reportphishing@apple.com" exists, in case you also are getting a ton of "testing invites" like "OpenAI GPT Advertising, LLC. has invited you to test OpenAI GPT". They come from throw-away domains but the links are to Apple.

This is worrying.

After publishing alarming results on the carcinogenic effects of , the senior researcher of the study seems to be removed from his position as research director at his Italian institute. The whole process seems to be very nontransparent.

Daniele Mandriolini had been the target of “an incredible amount of attacks” since the publication of his article.

What is going on here?

Does #FOSDEM have a #Peertube instance?

I know I can watch the videos here: video.fosdem.org/

Just didn't know if they had videos accessible on the Fediverse.

If they don't have a Peertube, is anyone thinking about, and allowed to, post these on a Peertube instance?

@futurebirdmyrmepropagandist And you, you have a lot of this cryptid currency, you say? Not leppy gold, but real, bona fide jeepies? Like they keep in Ft. Gnox? I'm a cryptid, and those are hard to get, even for me. Best I can usually get is those scrip coupons for monthly glamour upkeep--always someone around that needs a veil or mask repaired, after all. Or dollars, I guess. That's also fine.

Is your cat running a protection racket on the smallfolk fae, or what?

I loved working full-time on @vite.dev@bsky.brid.gy hired by StackBlitz. High praise to companies hiring OSS devs! But as I did when starting @vitest.dev@bsky.brid.gy with @antfu.me@bsky.brid.gyAnthony Fu, for this new community adventure, as project steward of @npmx.dev@bsky.brid.gy together with @danielroe.dev@bsky.brid.gydaniel roe 🇺🇦, I'll be going independent. Here we go again ❤️

RE: hachyderm.io/@jenniferplusplus

This is so correct. Any feasible-in-non-infinite-time review makes assumptions about the developer’s intentions, understanding, likely errors, and many other human factors. None of that holds for LLM generated code, so but extension the review process itself no longer holds.

This might be worth a PSA - if you use via Snap, every file you delete inside VSCode is not actually getting deleted. It goes to a "Trash" folder at ~/snap/code/current/.local/share/Trash and never (ever) gets deleted. Last year I found I had 44 GB in undeleted files, in the following GitHub issue this is happening to a lot of people.

There's been an open bug ticket for over a year: github.com/microsoft/vscode/is
