Here's a fun data fact.

Today around 10am I opted back in to Mastodon's discovery features, and my server immediately went "wowie zowie" (that's a technical term).

It's no slouch of a server, either- a VPS running with two cores and 4GB of RAM. And it's always much slower when I turn those discovery features on.

Or, perhaps, you can follow my recent favourite fediverse account, @labor工劳快讯 X 工劳小报：关注当代打工人, which collects news about modern Chinese labour issues that you will never find on Chinese social media platforms.

In general I think there is a huge lack of understanding among western users about how much Chinese social media and Chinese tech companies are intertwined with the government, a lack of understanding or engagement with Chinese social issues which are heavily censored on all Chinese social media platforms, and a mistake belief that "well, Chinese social media can't be much worse than the American ones". I had to mute the discourse around TikTok for my own sanity because there was so much complete misunderstanding around privacy, censorship, and the nature of these companies. It's like seeing people say "we don't want to use apps run by (american) fascists, so we will flock to an app that shares all its data with a fascist government, and actively censors all topics unfavourable to that government". It makes no sense.

Of course, I think it is good that people are engaging with Chinese people, finally, as people, and not as just abstractions. I think it is also good that people have an incentive to learn my native language. I just wish people would use that to engage with and listen to the Chinese people who have been posting here, all along.

I do think link previews can be better integrated to browsers with a proper standard... It's so common and yet it's all server dependent and can't be properly and easily done client side.

It should be able to be done without any framework or even without JS.

A quick update from me. While some might have said, “entering the Fediverse with its unique and engaged culture is totally bonkers when you’re in the middle of a federal leadership race”, we said, “sure, why not? It’s the only platform that really corresponds to our values, and it’s worth trying at least.”

Shoutout to @ZebKingZeb King 🇨🇦 who lobbied with relentless grace for this to happen.

This means that yes, the campaign and I are here now. But also, that we’re spread really thin and are not going to be able to engage to the level of engagement that Fediverse culture expects, at least not in the short term.

I’m not a fan of just broadcasting here, but for the next couple of months, that’s mostly what we’ll be doing.

Our young staffer who posts on every social media platform has enthusiastically learned as much as possible about Fediverse practices, and is doing a hell of a job here at posting in a thoughtful way (as some of you have noted).

일전에 2월 말에서 3월까지의 한반도 날씨를 한파 가능성을 높게 봤는데, 이제 급변의 가능성을 조금 더 높게 잡아야 할 것 같습니다. 전체적으로 지구의 열 에너지 흐름 자체가 상당히 이상한 상황이라는건데, 이후 MJO나 ENSO등이 튀게 되면 여름까지도 극단적인 기후가 나타날 수 있을 것 같습니다. 무엇보다 가뜩이나 힘든 개학/환절기 시즌에 아동들이 힘들어 질 것 같아서 걱정됩니다. 이미 B형 독감과 열감기가 갑자기 유행하고 있는데요. 모쪼록 습도와 온도 관리에 만전을 당부드리며, 건강하시길 기도하겠습니다. 좋은 하루 되세요.

Polar Cap 평균 기온 편차를 보면 갑자기 뜨뜻한 열점이 하나 보이는 것이 보입니다. 상층의 열기가 북극의 공기를 밀어내고 있다는건데요. 문제는 이 한파가 어디로 떨어질지 예측할 수 없다는 것입니다. 현재 T+240 시점의 ECMWF 자료는 큰 한파가 시베리아, 그리고 그린랜드 일대에서 시동이 걸리고 있는걸 보여주는데요. 통상적인 예상으로는 대략 거기서 1주일에서 열흘 사이에 유럽에 한파가 찾아올 것으로 예상됩니다. 기압 배치가 2021년 유럽 한파와 굉장히 유사해요. 한반도는 이상 고온과 기습 한파가 교차할지도 모르겠어요.

이후에는 약 2월 중하순까지 급격하게 기온이 오를 것으로 예상됩니다. 현재 여러 모델은 북극진동(AO)이 2월 말이 아니라 2월 중순에 양전하는 것을 예상하고 있는데요. 특히 눈여겨 볼것은 정규화 CDAS 지위고도 편차치입니다. 1월 중순부터 매우 강한 양의 편차치가 관측됩니다. 성층권이 갑자기 기온이 오르는, 성층권 돌연승온(SSW)의 심화를 보여줍니다. 이는 2월 중순경에 최고조에 달하며 북반구 중위도 지역에 거대한 날씨 변화를 유발할 것으로 예상됩니다. 거기다 상층 바람까지 갑자기 멈추는데요. 3월까지 영향이 이어지겠습니다.

정말 입춘날만 반짝 따뜻한데요. 24시간 예상 일기도를 보면 1046hPa의 한랭한 고기압이 30km/h의 빠른 속도로 남동진하고 있는 것이 보입니다. 그리고 한반도를 덮고 있던 온난한 해양고기압은 더 빠른 속도로 물러갑니다. 약 2월 6일 09시를 시작으로 기온이 빠르게 떨어지기 시작하며 한반도는 이때부터 약 24~36시간 가량 한랭핵의 영향을 직접적으로 받아 매우 추워질 것으로 예상됩니다. 예상되는 한파의 정점은 지표면 냉각이 최고조에 달하는 7일 늦은 밤부터 9일 새벽까지겠는데요. 수도권 기준 -10℃까지도 예상됩니다.

대신 최저기온은 크게 올랐습니다. 대략 내일 오후까지 갑자기 봄이 온 듯한 기온이 유지되겠는데요. 푄 현상이 발생한 강원 일대는 낮 기온이 10℃ 가까이 오르기도 하겠습니다. 오늘 아침 최저기온은 -8~2℃, 낮 최고기온은 4~12℃로 평년보다 2~4℃가량 높습니다. 주요 지역별로는 서울 -1~7℃, 대전 -3~9℃, 대구 -5~11℃, 광주 -2~11℃, 부산 2~12℃, 제주 5~13℃입니다. 어제 예상했던 오늘/내일 강설은 오늘은 철원, 내일은 양구-인제 일대에만 아주 약간 올 것으로 예상됩니다. 그리고 추위가 내려옵니다.

26/2/4 날씨 이것저것 오늘은 미세먼지 경보부터 드립니다. 그래도 매우 나쁨이나 최악 수준은 아니라 다행이네요. 기압 상황이 블로킹을 형성하고 있어 중국 일대의 무시무시한 미세먼지가 넘어오는건 차단하고 있지만, 역으로 그 기압이 만든 기류 정체로 인해 어제 발생한 역내 미세먼지가 상당히 가라앉아 있는 상태입니다. 특히 수도권을 위시한 중서부 지역엔 낮부터 대기 상층의 국외 미세먼지가 유입되고, 동시에 역내 미세먼지 발생이 겹치며 일평균 미세먼지 농도가 '나쁨'으로 예상됩니다. 날이 풀리니 결국엔 미세먼지 불청객이 찾아오네요.

The one question asked at the end was "How did the attackers bypass 2FA?"

The TL,DR is that the attack used a web proxy in front of PyPI, and users using TOTP method saw a site that looked valid, entered their username, password, which was captured by the proxy and forwarded along to PyPI, and then presented with a web form for their TOTP, which they entered, and that was also sent along to the attacker.
If they were using Webauthn, nothing happened, since the browser/device wouldn't prompt the user since the domains don't match - strengthening the case for non-TOTP.

Since then, we've also added an extra layer of confirmation for TOTP logins from a new location, which while can be annoying, may also inspire folks to use Webauthn more.
