What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

Explaining to Americans why fedi is worth it: exhausting

Watching the rest of the world already get it: validating

A social network that doesn't care who's in the White House:

Priceless.

For everything else, there's the fediverse.

"you can just use embedded rust libraries off the shelf for GPUs because it's just a normal no-std library, duh" is SUCH a huge validation for how we've structured the embedded Rust ecosystem. No OS to port, no complex tooling to set up. If you can run rust code, you can just drop no_std crates in.

RE: social.wake.st/@liaizon/116085

The fediverse will be fine because it isn't beholden to a single entity, in more than one way.

You typically see this mentality with US folks who are blind to the fact that most people don't want another US corp to dictate their social interactions.

We're building a better alternative that will become the dominant player in the not to distant future.

Whoa, I just noticed:

Technical Standard #58 was published two weeks ago!

Unicode Link Detection and Formatting:
URLs and Email Addresses
unicode.org/reports/tr58/

---

【This document specifies two consistent, standardized mechanisms that address [URL] problems, consisting of:

1 )link detection: detecting URLs and email addresses embedded in plain text that properly handles non-ASCII characters, and
2) minimally escaping: minimal escaping of non-ASCII code points in the Path, Query, and Fragment portions of a URL.】

Hi all - just wanted to introduce squeak.solarcene.community

I've been working on a new project recently to build a web server inspired by compost.party

If you would like some free hosting for a static website perhaps to document your projects or host your digital then you are very welcome. The server has vibes as each user gets a public_html folder. You'll get ssh access and the server has installed to help make nice static websites. The goal will be to have 100% uptime, due to its very low power consumption it does not require the power saving I use for the solarcene.community mastodon server.

Probably the key thing is that a project should have a mascot and in this case the server is called Squeak and it's an awesome bat! Squeak was designed by @alipunk𝒜𝓁𝒾⋆ (check out her website for more of her work).

Just get in touch if you would like to have a small website!

Squeak the bat - cartoon bat with sunglasses and a cool visor, has a small old school walkman and headphones. Flying on a sunset background.Squeak the bat sleeping upside down in the solarpunk style server room. There are a few devices on a shelf, Squeak's sunglasses and visor as well. A string of lights hand down with a few plans. In the background of the window is a solar panel and further in the distance is a wind turbine.

I've used the , mostly for over 8 years. Should come to .social that will end my time here. Should Age Verification come to most other large instances, that will end my time on the Fediverse as it will no longer be a place that is safe or sane for folks, especially us folks living in many places where governments are actively restricting our rights.

Network Health: Redefine what it means to be safe on Mastodon

Everyone on today’s internet is directly exposed to regulations like GDPR, the Digital Services Act (DSA), the Digital Markets Act (DMA), and lately numerous age verification (or assurance) laws and related social media bans for minors. We will perform a regulatory audit to ensure full legal compliance of our own servers, and explore how this knowledge can be shared with the community. We are also forming an interdisciplinary age-verification working group, to help us navigate the complex nature of these international laws. Simultaneously, the team will draft and publish new community guidelines and moderation policies for the servers we operate. Additionally, we are updating the terms of service (we ran a community consultation on this in October 2025) and privacy policy for our own servers.

Before posting "Y sucks", have you perhaps considered you might just personally not like Y?

Before posting "you should use Z instead", have you perhaps considered that other people might just personally not like Z?

People are allowed to have different preferences and desires and priorities. That is part of what makes us human.

If you want to replace Y, *listen* to what the users of Y want. Otherwise you are just shouting into the void, and making them want to try Z even less.

We are now running all Parch Linux infrastructure on Parch Linux itself.

This is an important milestone for us. We trust our own system in production. Build, CI, repositories, services. All powered by Parch.

We are also preparing to unveil a dedicated Parch Server edition. It is designed to be practical and accessible for everyone. It includes several focused features that we will explain soon in a detailed post on the official Parch Linux English blog.

Unfortunately, this progress comes at a difficult time for my country, Iran. The situation here is unstable and hard for many people.

I ask you to keep the people of Iran in your thoughts. We hope to pass through these conditions safely and reach freedom.

The UK has announced plans to fast-track legislation requiring “age verification for VPN use”. The correct term, however, is not age verification but identity verification.

A law like this would require everyone to identify themselves in order to use a VPN. This would pose a risk to whistleblowers, violate human rights, and represent yet another step toward an authoritarian society.

WE NEED DIGITAL MUSEUMS

one huge fall out of devaluing the work of digital archivists and librarians is that is overtaking and burying in search engine results, historically significant .

we cannot leave it to search engines to act as curators, librarians, archivists, auditors, appraisers. techbros goal is profit, not historical significance.

This is interesting!

Eventide Audio is re-releasing Music Mouse, a "pioneering software program from 1986 that allowed anyone with a computer to make music", turning "simple cursor gestures into harmonically rich music in real time".

The slop huckster's dilemma:

"AI assisted tools are powerful but they should only be used by experts to work on things they're already experts in"

AND

It's hard to build expertise without going through the hard problems yourself, and the human brain is not conditioned to go through the hard things when there is a magical lever you could just pull that mostly does it for you

"The UI is simple and beautiful" 😎

I haven't heard any negative feedback about the new Loops UI (across web and app).

Attention to detail and polish before shipping has really paid off, especially considering how harsh I was treated before publishing the source code.

Thank you for being patient, Loops is now yours with the most polished beta the fediverse has ever seen, not to mention the fastest growing behind Mastodon and Pixelfed 🚀
