What Brings People to FreeBSD?

Recent comments on our community post showed just how diverse the paths into FreeBSD can be. Some users have been running FreeBSD since the 1990s for its stability and predictable behavior. Others found it through TrueNAS, books, mentors, user groups, or simply curiosity.

Thank you to everyone who shared their experience. These stories help newcomers see the many ways FreeBSD supports real-world work.

Open source developers are facing severe burnout: unpaid work, toxic communities, and hyper-responsibility are pushing maintainers to the brink ⚠️
73% report burnout; 60% considered leaving.

Companies relying on OSS must fund, respect, and support maintainers to sustain critical infrastructure 🛠️

Soo , welcome to the reality show.

This is what happens every time it rains for the past three years. I'm tired of talking, pleading, and suffering. Nothing has changed in three years.
But this time we can make a difference, even if it's just a little! By participating and donating to the winter pajama campaign, we can keep these children warm.

I hope this stirs your conscience a little 💔‼️

Pssst! BoxyConnect comes soon to @BoxyBSD!

BoxyConnect allows you to create a private network / private link between multiple boxes at BoxyBSD. And the best? You can even create this over different locations/countries to provide you more flexibility.

You can simply assign any RFC1918 addresses on your new additional network interface on both sites and communicate in your own private network - even miles away.

This feature is currently in beta and will hopefully be available to everyone (just like all other services of course for free). Enjoy !

This new feature is powered by @gyptazy!

Three years ago today, we opened the doors to our corner of the Fediverse. 💙

What started as an idea has grown into a friendly space for good conversations, smart humor, and authentic interactions. It’s been amazing watching this community grow with all of you.

Thank you to everyone who’s shared, posted, and made Vivaldi Social part of their online space. You’ve helped shape this community into what it is today.

Here’s to everyone who’s been part of it, and to all the new voices we’ll meet along the way.

Happy 3rd birthday, Vivaldi Social! 🎉

@stefanoStefano Marinelli @ricardoRicardo Martín the article mentioned the FreeBSD subreddit and The FreeBSD Forums.

Yorick Peterse shared his post in the sub, where it was very well-received. Pictured: insights that are not visible to the public (I very rarely share such things, doing so seems harmless on this occasion).

No mention of Discord, Twitter, or X.

Also pictured: the wiki for FreeBSD Discord very recently cautioned that the FreeBSD Community Code of Conduct can not be enforced. I do not imagine that this caution relates to any recent misconduct there …

On November 30, 2022, I tooted for the first time on Mastodon.

“Hello world!”

Then I began tooting my and a ton of , and . Everyone here responded so genuinely, and with such positivity, that I was very quickly made to feel at home.

My deepest gratitude goes out to the community, a that has literally improved the quality of my time on this spinning rock as it hurtles through space, towards a future that seems more uncertain every day. You have been my friends, my therapists, my critics and fans, as well as an inspiration and reliable sounding board. Mastodon really is unlike any other “social media platform” out there.

Today, I celebrate the arbitrary milestone of twelve thousand followers, and I wanted to say thank you.

Thank you for the favourites, the boosts, the follows, and the comments.

Thank you for your conversations, discussions, and corrections.

Thank you for listening to my music and sharing your thoughts, and for following along on your chosen streaming service. Your support has been amazing.

But, above all, I’d like to thank you all for making Mastodon the friendly and welcoming place that it is. My experience here has predominantly been one of acceptance and support, and it has been truly humbling. There is nowhere else quite like it.

Massive huge love and big gigantic hugs to you all,

- Jon

The new @BoxyBSD platform gained some new features for a better experience!

* The new portal now also finally supports VNC access to your BSD based VPS instances!

* You can finally select ISO files which offers you even to install any BSD or version from scratch or to install your VPS instance based on your personal needs without relying on a ready2use image. More images can be added upon request quickly. Simply get in touch with @gyptazy

* You can now get up to 2 free VPS instances to test and evaluate HA setups, multi-region setups etc.

* Extended DN42 peering (where you can also use your DN42 IPv4 addresses)

This is created by @gyptazy and if you're interested into more information, just come to the FOSDEM 2026 for a chat!

The new BoxyBSD platform now offers VNC access and ISO selection which brings in several new possibilities for users.

Hi , I'm stuck.media and happy to be here - the place for knowledgeable malcontents, people of action & passion who thrive without the corporate teat.

I'm an indie on the east coast of , so-called . I make and more. I wish it weren't so, but the times call for drastic measures, thus my output focuses primarily on and .

It's time to fight back. I'm glad to be here. We are not alone.

Feel free to say hi, I'm .

A photo of three 3 inch round stickers against a white backdrop. The design is a black ring with the words "trans rights are human rights" in sanserif capitals. In the centre of the ring is a double black flag, and a trans pride flags blue, pink and white bars fill the background. A large 4" square sticker reading in the Tesla motors font: Fueled by Fascism. In the centre is a twist one elon musk throwing a seig hiel on live TV. He's wearing an inverted Tesla T logo over his head like a hood. White eyehole cutouts make the sharp point of the logo look exactly like a KKK pointy hat for losers. Down the wrist and arm are the words: fight fascists, and below: fight racistsA photo of several stickers against a white background. The design is the words: "fuck musk" in thick, bold capital sans-serifs. A thick red bar fills the space above and below the words.

I’m really a community person at heart. I’m willing to trade efficiency for broader communication. I’m ready to get things done not the way I envisioned if it means more people are helping.

I’m a jack of all trades, master of none. I take pride in depending on others, on experts, on people who have a different vision, a different experience. I thrive in communities, I don’t admire individual success.

I’m proudly average, always will be.

We at @BoxyBSD are happy to announce our new and modern website!

While the missions keeps the same by providing a free place for beginners to learn, educate themselves and test things in the wild on BSD-based systems (such like , , (or even ) and many more ones) with public accessible IP addresses, the old nerdy design only hit a niche of users.

We want to make BoxyBSD more accessible & enjoyable to everyone and this is one of the first steps. We know, a laggy SSH connection doesn't make fun and therefore, we're also setting up new locations to provide you a better latency independent of your location.

During this time, signups for new users are currently deactivated until the new locations are up and running and the first real-user tests within the new interface have been successfully performed.

Thanks to @gyptazy for this :)

My draft PR for linking Django Individual Members' names to their djangoproject.com profiles is ready for review. Thanks to everyone who has guided this so far (@adamchainzAdam Johnson :django: :python:, @pauloxPaolo Melchiorre, @sarahboyce, @thibaudcolas).

This will lead to another PR allowing members to add links to their profiles, helping the community grow more connected.

Feedback and suggestions are very welcome.
