Every time I see someone saying “Oh no, I missed the CFP deadline”, I can’t help thinking about all those features in Python or Django that were deprecated for years… and then someone is shocked when they finally get removed. 🫠

On the fediverse we also see a lot of accusations of Bluesky being owned by Jack Dorsey, and this isn't true. My understanding is that Jay performed an impressive amount of negotiation to allow Bluesky to receive funding independently.
These days Jack Dorsey is instead focusing on Nostr, which I can only describe as "a sequel to Secure Scuttlebutt with extremely bad vibes where bitcoin people talk about bitcoin"

Blacksky went from a "custom feed that created a sense of shared space" to being the first independent ATProto microblogging community outside of Bluesky.
This is where the focus needs to be in the fediverse as well. Creating safe and welcoming communities that people want to be part of.
Where Does Community Live?
ActivityPub and ATProto both promise to rebuild social life online, but they answer the question of where community actually forms in fundamentally different ways. Protocol design is institutional design, and right now those institutions are being built.

If you would like some free hosting for a static website perhaps to document your projects or host your digital #zine then you are very welcome. The server has #geocities vibes as each user gets a public_html folder. You'll get ssh access and the server has #Hugo installed to help make nice static websites. The goal will be to have 100% uptime, due to its very low power consumption it does not require the power saving I use for the solarcene.community mastodon server.
Probably the key thing is that a project should have a mascot and in this case the server is called Squeak and it's an awesome bat! Squeak was designed by 
@alipunk𝒜𝓁𝒾⋆ (check out her website for more of her work).

Apparently there is a "backlash" against a Black community setting boundaries for themselves?
I guess that's one thing the fediverse and Atmosphere have in common. People throwing tantrums and demanding that complete strangers listen to their unwanted opinions.
The bottom line is, while this incident does show that yes, other online communities experience anti-Black racism as well, what makes a difference is the response of that community. Eg. outpouring of support vs questioning and gaslighting the victim.
(And I'm sure the presence of reply controls helps!)
Fediverse has such a long way to go.

People who like growing things tend to be the least "zero sum" people I've ever met. I meet activists who act like sharing their time will inevitably lead to their death, but gardeners are always sharing.
We give each other seed, baby plants, cuttings, vegetables, greens, eggs - sometimes even before we know each other. If I say to someone "I wish I could grow tomatoes better" they'll jump in and offer last generation's regionally adapted seed without hesitation.
Because perhaps there's something to the experience of planting a bean and watching it turn into hundreds of beans, all from one bean. Or a single squash seed and seeing it produce dozens of squash and thousands of seeds. Or watching an enormous tree grow from a tiny seed and then a little sprout, and bring owls back where there weren't any before. And realizing that sharing only spreads the abundance, and never takes it away. If my tomatoes grow better, and hers fail, she knows I'll probably offer her that even better performing seed right back, and some extra tomatoes.
One of our friends on the border said he realized capitalism is bullshit the first time he grew tepary beans and watched a single bean turn into pounds of food and plenty of seed to save for next time. Why would anyone control your access to food when it's just that simple?
And the homesteading folks seem to like to make it seem really difficult, but they'll plant 10 acres to grain instead of oak trees and lament having to rent a harvester combine instead of having food literally fall out of the trees (and have a forest of other food and habitat for game, to boot), which is a failure of planning rather than the reality of what growing food is actually like.
