What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

My one suggestion for the @Mastodon team is to partner with hosting companies, & allow people to setup an instance on their own domain.

People could purchase the plans they prefer, & Mastodon could get a commission for referring people.

I think all official apps should do this!

I saw that NYT bit about LLMs being great at extracting and converting data and building an app, and I can't help thinking: "For you, the day an entire data-browsing app was built quickly before your eyes was the greatest software experience of your life. But for me, it was a Tuesday. In 2008."

And I mean that literally. Here's an example (archive link): web.archive.org/web/2008030410

That took two developers (one frontend, one backend) two days from "reporter comes downstairs and says they have data tables in Word docs, what could we do with that" to being live on the site.

RE: xoxo.zone/@mathowie/1160943180

I find it interesting how people would rag on Apple Intelligence without having counterexamples of things which are notably more reliable. Putting LLMs into situations where there isn't a cheap way for the tool to measure success is going to be a struggle.

A while ago, I changed my blog over to Zola. I like it! But almost immediately it started costing more, due to increased outgoing data.

Today I finally figured it out!

(Zola includes all posts in your RSS feed by default and the file was getting big)

Screenshot from AWS Amplify of a graph. The trend line is pretty steady, then after a short spike, it goes down to a much lower baseline.
